A word (or many) for those contemplating on attending film school.

Perhaps I should have started this post by explaining that this is a conversation I had previous with a mentor of mine. I am seeing I set the tone for this one wrong. Apologies. Sorry to have offended the gods.

In other circles, I have seen some heated debate of this issue as well. I appreciate very much each persons level of success in this forum.

I think your post was great. I know personally a lot of people do things because other people told them that this was the only way to go and posts like this just let people know that this might not be the only way of doing something. Let's take Isaac for instance. He's going to "Film School" and I think he's going to be great. Now if he didn't go to film school I still think he would be great because it's all about making the best out of the situation you're in and nothing is going to stop him from making movies. So I guess what i'm saying is there are many paths to the center and as long and you get there and keep making kickass movies it's all good.

true... dont go to film school to just learn...go to film school to apply and test the knowledge you already have..

That's INSANE. If that's what you think you're doing, I can't think of a more gross waste of time or money.

Yeah, I can spend $30k in a year on making a movie to apply and test knowledge that I have read/learned over the years. What would I apply to a school and spend that dough for that reason?

Film school is great...offers great oppurtunities, and is for some, and for some it's not. Basically, it's the other side of the coin, and as the old saying goes, "there's two sides to every coin."

Its hard to expect that you can come into a new forum with any form of chastizement (sp?).

This topic, as someone said earlier, has been discussed ad nauseum. however you immediately came in and began acting preachy and condescending.

I mean, we expect that from Hudson ( :D ) but not from a brand new poster.

I wish I could marry rich.

I didn't go for my MA in film (I do have a BA in media studies and beer drinking though). I considered it, but decided to take the PA route instead. After I got my BA, I busted my ass for low wages for a few years, and learned on the job, and now I do pretty well, mostly because I proved myself to DPs and producers while at a lower position.

However, I work in TV, not film. That being said of all the people I've worked with, less than 50% went to film school. Does that mean not to go? No. Basically, in this buisiness, if you want to make it, there are two things you need; knowlege/skills, and connections. So, you can go the 60-70,000 dollar route and go to film school and get those knowledge and connections (maybe) or you can go the free route and PA to get that stuff (maybe). Honestly, if my parents would have paid for any of it, I would totally have gone to film school, but I am happy with my lifeplace and minimal debt (17k instead of 75k)

so that's just my 2 cents

I guess you could call what I am doing "film school", although we're not dealing with film. My main motivation in going to film school was partly because of the education in the buisness side of things, and partly motivated by the fact that I want a degree, and couldn't see myself being able to get one any other way that studying a subject that I love. There are some things I don't like about the program, but for the most part it's been pretty good.

Well I could get into that debate as well but I figured since the forum is mainly about filming type things that I would even go that route. Of course I think with Philosophy and English a lot of the jobs that you would get using the knowledge you have from that rely greatly on whether you have that sheet of paper

Hmm, why do we never see this debate about getting a Philosophy or an English degree?

Garrett

My first degree was a double major in English & Communications. My second degree was a double major in Philosophy & Religious Studies. What did my education prepare me for? Telling you about the specials for the night!

Of course, now I work in education...
