The 101 Greatest Screenplays of All Time

FINALLY! A LIST THAT GETS IT RIGHT FOR A CHANGE (well damn near right anyway)...

Premier Magazine's The 101 Greatest Screenplays of All Time

You all know that I'm a big fan of film lists, but normally I get ulcers from the ridiculous choices made for the top spot (and the top twenty spots for that matter.) But at long last, the #1 pick is rightfully Casablanca...hands down the finest script ever committed to paper (regardless of the infamous "on-the-fly" stories surrounding its masterful creation by the Epsteins and Howard Koch...)

Plus, overall, the entire list is respectable (I have some nitpicks here and there, but they pale in comparison to those of other best of lists.)

Seems like a pretty good list so far.

Though I'd interchange the placements of Sunset Boulevard and All About Eve.

Billy Wilder deserves a top five placement.
Also I'd have placed The Apartment in at number 9 instead of Some Like It Hot but thats just me nitpicking.

Wilder is a genius.

I am totally flabbergasted. This was indeed a fine list. But it has missed one of the finest SCRIPTS ever written: Body Heat. Body Heat was a very good movie, one of my favorites. But the script was incredible, damned near perfect.

I'd put the Godfather 2 before the Godfather and I do agree with Horse.

Hannah and Her Sisters ?

Sideways way down at 90 ? Forrest Gump and Field of Dreams in the 90's ?

Butch and Sundance in the 15 ? Schindlers List at 49 ?

I'd say the list needs work.

Sideways doesn't even belong on the list.

ACT ONE:

Talk.

Talk some more.

Light a cigarette.

Talk a little more.

ACT TWO

Talk.

Talk.

Talk.

YELL!

Talk.

Screw.

Talk about screwing.

Light a cigarette.

ACT III

Talk.

Talk.

Get chased by an ugly naked guy.

Talk.

Talk.

Run a car into a tree.

Talk.

Talk.

Listen to phone messages.

END

Did the script to Butch and Sundance have that music video written into it?

Cause if so it deserves to stay where it is and should be grateful.

Don't get me wrong i love 95% of that movie and it is brilliantly written.

But that bicycle scene and all the photo montages. Ugh....

Forrest Gump & Field of Dreams definitely shoulda been higher.

However, I gotta side with David on Sideways.

Loved Sideways. Then again, yall don't nothing about Wine Country

(Okay; I don't either but it sounded cool)

Totally into Sideways. Great great stuff for me.

I'm with Hudson on Sideways but that isn't because of the wine country, just because I like smart talking head pictures.

I glanced at the list and just don't agree that you can have a greatest of list. There are too many factors that play into it.

 You don't see eye to eye with lists apparantly...
Did a List wrong you in another life? The Spanish Inquisition or the Salem Witch Trials perhaps?

It surely is hard to accept. As Horse mentioned, way to many classics for me

Was Frankenstein or Bride on there ? Apocalypse Now ?

John...

I think that only a select few great films are actually great all around (in dialogue, in story, in direction, in acting, in "x" factor, etc.) In other words, some films may not have necessarily had the greatest of scripts, but excelled everywhere else...therefore securing their classic status. The three you mentioned:
Frankenstein - Bride - Apocalypse Now
may have fallen through the cracks for this very reason.

IMO only of course.

Cheers
