Lighting car interiors during night shoot

Hello,

We begin filming a full length feature in May. The majority of the shoot is at night. I was wondering if anyone had any great advice on lighting car interiors at night while the car is in motion. We are planning to put the car on a forward mount dolly and pull it behind a truck. I need an affordable means to light the interior for conversations taking place within during a series of driving sequences.

Thank you,

We tested just this a few nights ago using two LED lights.

Here's a quick MOV file (2.5MB):

Nice!

Another method is to gaffer tape fluorescents to the dash. Use a power inverter so that you can power them from the cigarette lighter.

Or you could put a light (and a genie or an inverter) on the truck and light from outside the car.

Or a combination of both...

Hey Marius,

Are these your "self contained" Led lights? Battery built in?

Yep, they sure are. Wouldn't really have been necessary here though, as we could of just used the 12V car adapter, but it looks so pretty because there's no cables in the pic! :)
And those are suction cups with a mini ball head; the suction cups work okay for a short period of time on a flat surface, but the vacuum cups are a LOT better. We will be selling both options soon; suction cups about $4, vacuum cups about $38.

i would be pissed if someone stuck that to my LCD on the GPS. It didnt leave any marks?
Looks good though.
I used 2 daylight balenced flouros for my night shots.

i'm diggin the setup Vidled; checked out your site; like what you have; which model comes with the built in battery? (assuming the battery is rechargable and removeable?)

Hehehe...nah, no marks, and it's the version sans GPS: just displays MPG and a clock! :)

I emailed that company wanting to know how much those lights were and they have yet to get back to me. I wanted to know how they compared in quality and price to the very popular LED LITEPANELS lights. Also, Kino Flo makes a mini that can be mounted inside cars as well. MTV uses them a lot on the Real World or whatever show they are doing where there folks in a car.

Hey DVX100shooter.

Well, you PMed me on 3/28 at 5:32pm, asking those questions. And I replied using PM at 8:16pm the same day. Since I heard nothing back from you, I again forwarded the message on 4/02, at 7.28am.

Me thinks someone needs to check their PMs! :)
