Logo Revised. Please Critique

Hi.

So.. First of all... I would say you need to smooth out the movement of the film frame, so that it arrives at its full scale smoothly. Usually that would be done through making a smooth curve via the bezier controls as opposed to a sharp linear one.

Now, I would probably render everything out at 24 fps, so that the movement doesn't look as smooth and video-ish. To make it not seem as sharp I would also add a bit of grain to the whole clip.

As to the more fundamental things.. First off, I don't think the vivid blue colour of the logo matches the slightly blue-gray colour of the film. Then, after we see the volumetric lighting, the text in white appears offset from where the volumetric text has been shown. And also... The rain and the lighting.. How do they fit in? To start with, the drops of rain look so circular that I first thought that it's now and not rain, heh.

I think what's more important here is to show the name of the company clearly, as opposed to using 'cool FX' which aren't even necessary, I think.

Yeah, the font is definetely to be changed. There is just.. Something wrong with it. Perhaps, the Logo itself needs revising. Look at the logos around you - most of them have something done to the text which makes you differenciate between them. Right now, the current logo is just plain font over a piece of film.

Also, it looks better now, but I would syncronize the horizontal and vertical stretching of the piece of film. Right now it moves to its destination, and only then finishes the scaling process.

Overall it needs something... And it's not the lightning, I think. Not with the motion blur at least.

what if the company name pushed on from the right instead of from the foreground ... this could be what causes teh left side of the film too open up

So as the text pushes on the left side of the film grows.

Seems like there's no relation to the way the elements come on right now ... not sure why the film is curled and the text is straight on.

using the company name to OPEN something up seems like a good metaphor to me "bergvision is going to open up possibilities" by literally pushing the envelope.

I would loose the lightning bolt too. Theres no reason for it. Plus it seems like there are like 20 animated film company logos with some type of lightning in it.

It's not curled, Jack. I thought it is too, but after rewatching it a few times it just appears to be so because the image is trimmed to be 16:9.

I'm talking about how the film comes to a point on the left side of the screen:

I'll look at the new one though.

I think that's come a long way. Much more dynamic and cohesive.

My only comments have to do with the music and the aliased edges of the font.

So font edges look jagged -- maybe just compression. but you might have to build a png file that 's large in photoshop or something so the edges don't get jagged.

Is the music temp? Seems a little disco-ish to me ... What about something more classically cinematic?

There is something strange about it. I mean I like it .. but it could use a little backround picture, make a silhouette (SP?) of a guy with a camera inside the film strip?

Also to help with the zooming in issue, I'd suggest speeding up that last part of the logo, by a factor of 2 or 3. So that it zooms in really fast without the viewer noticing it too much.

EDIT: Also the fact that the screen turns white... I don't think it quite works here. Might just stick to the blacks, and if you want to introduce a silhouette of a of a guy, like DL suggested, then just use the white colour for him.

This might help.
At one point, I was scratching my head as to why my text, titles, etc looked a little like old-school in-camera text.. you know "summer vacation 1996" sort of feel. Then I ditched any pure blacks and pure whites, and bam! Well I didn't ditched them I just made them a touch more grey. This is the one thing that I think would give your logo more of a professional feel. Just tone down the whites and bring a touch of grey into the blacks. Just a touch for each I think. Likewise, removing a some of the digital sharpness seems help.

IMO :)

Anyway, you might give it a shot.

I would advise against making the blacks dark gray.
It will look terrible when trying to dissolve or cut between the logo and the film. The eyes will adjust to the current dark gray as the blacks while the logo plays, and then all of the sudden in the next shot we will see an image with much deeper blacks and brighter whites.

EDIT: Also, you may want to blur the text as it gets closer, as if the virtual camera was focused on the film and where the text appears, but as the text gets closer to the 'lens' it gets blurred. Just make the right choice: use a defocus filter, and not the standard gauss blur. It looks extremely fake.

for your still above, I would suggest matting the lightning off the filmstrip, it seems natural that your logo is occuring "in" the film strip, so mask the film edges so the lightning occurs behind them.
