Indie Snap! HD Matte Box Reveiw

Without the flags:

With Flags:
17" x 11.5" x 7" (43cm x 29cm x 18cm)

I have the Pelican 1610 and I don't think it would be big enough--barely too small with all the flags on. Besides, I would want something where the foam will allow the matte box plenty of clearance--you don't want to put torque or any stress on the aluminum. That's alot of case. It would help if you took the top flag off, I suppose. That shaves off about an inch and a half.

Do you think the 1620 would work well enough? I was thinking of configuring the foam to allow me to put the camera in with the matte box still attached, but without putting any pressure at all on the matte box (that part with be deeper. Would that work?

First of all, the 1620 is a bit smaller (about 1/8") in the internal length and width. I would be hesitant to get that one for what you are wanting it to do, even with the added depth. Second, even if it would fit (just barely), the foam would have to be gutted significantly on the one side--leaving no rigidity to keep the entire camera from being slammed into the mattebox on some impact. The 1660 might work, but I'd research it first to make sure.

Is it bad to attach and detach the matte box all the time, say once a day? How long does it take to attach the matte box?

It is not bad at all--and it is quite easy--just slide it off the ring. I'd go that route personally--in fact, I do go that route!

Dakotapod recommends not storing the matte box in the case with the flags on. So would the 1610 or 1620 be big enough to hold the camera and unattached mattebox without flags, along with the french and side flags, FS-100, a couple P2 cards, 2 or 3 batteries (maybe 4?), charger, cables, and maybe an AT-4073a mic and shock mount for the camera.

Okay I just noticed I was given 2 different sets of dimensions.

lpcvideo says:
Without the flags: 11" x 7.5" x 3" (28cm x 19cm x 7.5cm)

Indie Snap! says:
The matte box with flags off is approx. 11" x 9" and 4" deep

This makes a difference between the 2 Stormcases I am now looking at (IM2720 or IM2750). Could someone clarify these dimensions for me please?

Hi Dakotapod,

I see the discount page for the DV mattebox but don't for the HD version. Is the $329 price for the HD mattebox the discount price for DVX users?

thanks in advance,

No, $289 - Scroll down the order page - It's under the DV version

I'd like to order the Hdmatte box. However, it seems the link is only for the DV version.

Pretty much bang on - I would wait to start cutting holes though....

Unfortunately... The cost of some of the materials has gone up very slightly :(

I have to increase the price a tiny bit - :( - $20 on the matte box and $10 on a pair of side flags. HD Box complete with French Flag and adater will be $309. Side flags will be $40/pair

I don't want to catch anyone off guard who plans to order, so I will hold off raising price until the end of the month. :) This gives ya a couple weeks to get under the wire.

Cheers

M2 & Indiesnap

M2 & Indiesnap

Hi all,

I'm going to be using the Indie snap Matte with an M2 adapter, has anyone tried this combination yet? Any do's or don'ts?

thanks in advance!

I just puchased HVX200 & M2 REDROCKMICRO lens adapter with nikon 17-35 2.8, 35-70 2.8 and the 80-200 2.8 lens.

will this matte box work with my setup? if not, what other same-price-range good kind would you guys recommend?

It will.

The lenses you note have front threads of 77mm [I think]

The best in your case would be to get the kit with an 82mm adapter [included] so you can use it on the HVX stock lens and a step ring @ 77mm to 82mm for the 35 adapter [inexpensive, about $10]

Cheers

So I will definitely need a 77mm to 82mm upconverter? I know I'm getting the 82mm adapter with it, but if I take that away for a second, what is the default size HD indiesnap attaches to? (The indiesnap website says: This matte box system can be used on any camera
from 52mm to 86mm).

I have 2 more questions:

(Again, my config is: HVX200, M2 adapter, Nikon 17-35 2.8, 35-70 2.8 and the 80-200 2.8 lenses with front threads of 77mm & IndieSnap HD Matte Box with 82mm adapter).

1. Is there a general filter package you'd suggest to get?

2. Is it better to get a 77mm filter and put it on the Nikon lens and then use the 77 to 82 upconverter for the Matte Box? Or do an upconversion 1st and then use 82mm filters?

Thank you.

Alex,

I answered these questions when you ordered - Check your email. [or spam filter]

If you have more questions or are unsure email me direct. I'll hook ya up.
