A couple of my online buddies already know about this stuff, but the past few weeks have been really weird for me. The moral of the story is to always remember that the video production community is really really small. Try to be a cool person, be available, and learn everything you can when you work with somebody new. You never know who knows who and where you'll find work.
I shot some stuff a few weeks ago for the Saint Louis Science Center for another company working as a freelance shooter. There's a robotics thing that's nationwide and it was in Saint Louis for 3 days. On one of those days I was the only guy doing everything... but on the other two I worked with one other guy... and each of those guys is very well known in the industry and I was humble-pie around them all day. I voluntarily took the role of "*****" and offered to do anything I could to facilitate their results... after that, in the past couple of weeks, things have exploded for me. (in a good way)
Here's a clip from one of the jobs that resulted... this is a quasi-BTS that I tried to shoot just so I'd have something from the time in a new environment. I was mainly doing lighting in these clips. In the shot where you see the backside of a Flathead 80... there were two of those, 4 four-banks, a Diva 400, Chimera China Ball, Chimera softbox, 2 750w ellipsoidals, 4 Mole Tweenie II's... about 8 practicals... and several 2x4 Kinos... it was an absolute TRUCKLOAD of lights. We set this place up for what appeared to be several different locations and blasted this one location out in one night! It was something insane like over 500 shots on the list and we banged them out like a machine. The two primary cams were Varicam and 16mm film.
I also thought this Panny monitor rocked... check the graph which shows blown whites or crushed blacks in real time... is that cool as sh*t or what? In that same bit notice the flo banks on the ceiling... the HUNDREDS of flo banks. That part with the cyc wall is in Avatar Studios here in STL. For as huge as that place was... what was more amazing is that a few days later I was working in an even bigger studio with a similar setup... "Jumby Bay Studios" has one of the largest soundstage, cyc walls, etc and I was doing completely unrelated stuff for the DOD and Express Scripts... then the next day I was with Jill Farmer (old name, married now)... a local news girl who is stunning to look at as well as charismatic... doing stuff for AB.
Again... the moral of the story is stated in the first paragraph... you never know who knows who... so be sure to be the kind of person you'd want to work with the next time you're shooting side-by-side with a total stranger... because you never know what doors they'll be happy to open.
