Speaking Of Baseball...Name Your All-Time Roster...

baseball.gif

Ok, so Jeremy (TheYankee) got me thinking...

Who would you say are the best players of all time by position?
-Also-
Name your pick for the best ballplayer of all time...
-And Finally-
The Best team in history is...

Try to list a starting roster, with an optional backup list.

Here goes nothin'...

My All-Time Roster

1st Base
Lou Gehrig (one of the few no-brainers on the list)

2nd Base
Rogers Hornsby (likewise)

Short Stop
Honus Wagner (can't argue with numbers like that IMO)

3rd Base
Mike Schmidt (he was unbelievable at 3rd)

Catcher
Johnny Bench (I have shared drinks and cigars with this living legend)

Pitcher
Nolan Ryan ()

Outfielders (OK, here's where it gets tricky)
After much consideration, I'll go with...
Joe DiMaggio
Babe Ruth
Willie Mays

-and-

My Backup Roster

1st...Jimmie Foxx
2nd...Jackie Robinson
3rd...George Brett
SS...Ozzie Smith
C...Yoggi Berra
P...Sandy Koufax
OF...Ty Cobb
OF...Ted Williams
OF...(tie) Mickey Mantle + Roberto Clemente

My Pick For The Best Player Of All Time
Joe DiMaggio

My Pick For the Best Team in History
1939 Yankees

There are so many players over so many eras. And every era is different. It's like comparing oranges with apples. My picks are not entirely based on offensive OR defensive statistics. It would be easy to just pick the best hitters at each position but sometimes it's necessary to look at someone who changed the way the game is played.

1st Base
Lou Gehrig (I agree...no brainer)

2nd Base
Jackie Robinson

Shortstop
Alex Rodriguez (I know...I know...)

Third Base
Brooks Robinson (greatest fielding 3rd baseman ever...he could dominate a game with his glove)

Catcher
Johnny Bench (the first MODERN catcher)

Pitcher
Sandy Koufax (most dominating pitcher I have ever seen...the reason I became a baseball fan...and a Dodger fan)

Outfield
Babe Ruth
Hank Aaron
Willie Mays

Second Team:
1st Base...Carl Yastzremski (he played 1st in the latter part and I couldn't fit him in the of. Another of my childhood heroes, he doesn't really belong here but it's an emotional thing)
2nd Base...Rogers Hornsby
Shortstop...Ozzie Smith (because of how he changed the position)
3rd Base...Mike Schmidt
Catcher...Mike Piazza
Pitcher...Bob Gibson
Outfield...Frank Robinson
Outfield...Mickey Mantle (probably my favorite position player growing up)
Outfield...Ted Williams (last hitter to hit .400)

Best Player of All-Time: Willie Mays (as a Dodger fan you have NO IDEA how much it hurts to say it) (In time I think it will be Alex Rodriguez.)
Best Team All-Time: 1927 Yankees.
Most unlikely world series winners: 1988 Dodgers (Kirk Gibson)

EDIT: After much deliberation I had to change Warren Spahn to Bob Gibson

but a back-up Roster is cheating
Not really. It was called out in Chad's post. I think of it as kind of "Second Team All-American" in other sports. The thing that bothered me most was including two active players, one of whom is perhaps beginning to tarnish his career by hanging on too long.

Kimko,

My man, Ty Cobb was best known as a Center Fielder.

Some Facts About His Amazing Career/Life...

-Ty Cobb has the highest lifetime batting average (.367) for any National Baseball Hall of Fame member.
-Ty Cobb never played on, nor managed, a World Series Championship team.
-Ty Cobb is second on the all-time hit list behind Pete Rose.
-Ty Cobb is one of only two people to hit a home run before his 20th birthday and after his 40th birthday.
-Ty Cobb stole home more than anyone else (50).
-Ty Cobb is the all-time batting average champ for the Tigers with a .368 average.
-Ty Cobb won more batting average titles than any other person (12).
-In 1936, he became the first player ever selected to the Hall of Fame.
-Ty Cobb became the first ball player to star in a movie, a drama by Grantland Rice, "Somewhere in Georgia."
-Cobb endorsed a chewing gum, a brand of suspenders and underwear.
-He associated with financiers and industrialists, golfed with President William Howard Taft, and visited President Woodrow Wilson in the White House.
-Cobb invested his money into real estate and securities, and owned an auto dealership. His best investment was in a Atlanta-based soft drink company, Coca-Cola.
-Ty Cobb's dentures sold for $7,475 at auction.

Ty Cobb only played 1 game at third base. He also played 14 games at first base, 2 games at second base and he pitched in 3 games. Most of these were in 1918.

oh oh i'm losing it! man i used to be into it. i must be thinking of wagner. i know they had something going as rivalary

Eh. All time can get too sticky, I'll post my current playing favs after the game, if this rain delay ends. By the way, can't believe no one has the splendid splinter in thier first team.

Allright, I'll play fair, here's my all time...

Johnny Bench C
Lou Gehrig 1B
Eddie Collins 2B
Mike Schmidt 3B
Cal Ripken, Jr. SS
Nolan Ryan P
Roger Clemens P
Babe Ruth OF
Ted Williams OF
Barry Bonds OF
Joe DiMaggio OF (hey, can we have a UTIL player?)
Tony Gwynn OF (it's personal)

Like John I will edit this (the rain delay is pissing me off too). I just need to really think and try to be more objective than just putting up my all time Yankee list (which is what I'm going to do also).

C'mon, Jeremy. If a Dodger fan can put Willie Mays (from the hated Giants) and Yankees on his list, I'm sure you'll have no problem being objective. You're too big a baseball fan, anyway...

In fact, there are only two Dodgers on my list, neither of which I need to apologize for...

Well, not to go against the grain of the thread or anything like that, but I think most of the selections statistically speaking sort of carry their own weight. That being said, I have put together my all time Yankee list. This is my essential team from THE essential team. You can take it and do what you like with it, but this is what I have put together as a fan of baseball and more specifically, the Yankees.

OF: Babe Ruth (Yankee Career: 659HR, .349BA, 2518Hits, 1971RBI)
OF: Mickey Mantle (Yankee Career: 536 HR, .298BA, 1509RBI, 2415Hits)
OF: Ricky Henderson (Yankee Career: 78HR, .288BA, 663Hits, 255RBI, but 326 stolen bases)
1B: Don Mattingly (Yankee Career: 222HR, .307BA, 2153Hits, 1099RBI)
2B: Billy Martin (Yankee Career: .257BA, 64HR, 877Hits, 333RBI)
3B: Alex Rodriguez (Yankee Career: .303BA, 84HR, 366Hits, and 236RBIS)
SS: Derick Jeter (Yankee Career: 169HR, .314BA, 1936Hits, and 763RBI)
C: Yogi Berra (Yankee Career: .285BA, 358HR, 2418Hits, 1430RBI)

For my pitchers… well that’s for another day. I’m sort of happy with this list. I think it has a little new, a little old, and then a couple of things in there just for me and my father (who MADE me a Yankee fan)

This is about the 20th time I’ve done this list.

Yes, I left Gehrig off for one reason. Gehrig with his .340 batting average and career 1995 RBI’s, not to mention his 493 home runs, consecutive playing streak, and what about the whole 2721 hits. He was never my hero growing up, Mattingly was.

-Jeremy

EDIT:

Don't get me wrong, I don't disagree with most of the selections other people have made, in fact I agree with a good amount of them. To me, as a student of the history of the game and as big of a fan that I am, it is hard for me to say here are the three outfielders I pick. I just can't do that, and think it's unfair. I will just pick from the people luckiest enough to play for the greatest team in the world.

EDIT #2: I missed the other part.

Greatest player of all time. The player that influenced me the most was either Mickey Mantle (my father's hero) or Don Mattingly (my hero). As far as greatest player of all time, that gets into stats, which I love, but I just can't pick, so I go for Don Mattingly, because he inspired me to keep playing and try to make a come back after my knee surgeries.

Greatest team, hands down, 1998 NY Yankees, because it was the first time I saw the Yankees win the World Series where I was old enough to appreciate it and sit beside my father when they did it. The previous times I was too young or living too far away.

Speed. Plus I was at the game when he stole second, third, and home at Yankee Stadium. He inspired me. Like I said, my picks are personal, things that ring true with me being a fan for almost 30 years. Joe D, I mean he is someone who stopped playing when my father was born in 1951, so it's hard for me to appreciate him in the same regard, whereas Ruth is legend, and the Mick was my father's hero.

I know it seems like my picks are all over the place, but on previous lists I've had Joe D, but this time, I don't know, Henderson got my nod.

-Jeremy

I feel like I'm being pressured to change it. Maybe the truth is I wanted someone else from the 80's Yankees of my youth to be there, but either way, Joe D aint playing in this series. Maybe he's at war right now :)

I swear, as DVXUser as my witness I will defend Mr. Hudson until the day I die with any opinion he might have regarding anything. From this day forth, I so swear it.

EDIT:
Good solid picks though
