Cinderella Man

I was shocked that this came out on DVD already because I kept hearing that because of the awful box office for a great film they were going to rerelease it in theatres for the xmas oscar season. I guess the studios wanted that DVD money ASAP... hmmm, I guess this is one of those rare exceptions where Hollywood greed beats artistic expression, huh?

when the movie was in theater they had a promotion of that if you didnt like the movie you could get your money back.

Funny, I watched it last night, and I realized exactly why no one (or far fewer than expected) went to see it at the box office. Pretty. Well acted. High production values. And boring as all heck. Ugh. I could barely finish it. It was filmed on my street though (in Toronto), so that was sort of interesting.

It bombed at the box office becuase it was released in the middle of the summer blockbuster season and it should've been released now, during the oscar season. Who the hells running the decisions at the studio! It's an absolutely flawless film. And Howards best since "ransom"!!!

just saw this movie, really nice film. not sure why it didnt do better.

great acting all around, and the baer guy seemed like a nut case...like adam carrola on steroids.

great looking film as well. man, sucks it didnt get more interest. i was thinking after i saw it, why didnt it do better? and i was like, maybe the title sucks? funny to read this thread and see it discussed as well.

i personaly like the title...but i can see people not getting what it was at first.

Apparently the title was bothering distributors here, so the movie was released under the name "Knockout"... Didn't really do well, anyway. Weird. It really is a great film, just damn good filmmaking that deserves much more attention than it got.

I've heard that too, but isn't it late now? December is almost over, they must have gave up on that idea...

but the oscars are what feb. so they'll get the sag members into watch it free i hope cause i'll go again

Finally saw this. The first half hour depressed me, but that's what it was supposed to do. I agree with all the kudos here about the acting, cinematography, and direction. But what really got me was the writing. It was amazing. There were none of those classic gimmees for this type of film. I kept expecting one of the kids to get TB, or the wife to try and finally go to a fight and get hit by a trolley. Aside from making Baer a paper-cut-out bad guy, there wasn't anything trite about the film. It was an inspirational story, sure, but the way it was told made it more so. The banter between Braddock and Gould is first rate, and the family dynamic is well developed. To me, the film would have been just as good if he was going for the thumb-wrestling championship. It was a love story, about a man and his love for his family.

"What are you fighting for this time?"
"Milk"

That says it all.

I agree Jim

Baer's character was totally one dimensional and could have had more substance; but great film anyways !

Hey B !

I remember these; awesome !

I wonder if Baer was really like that. I'm no boxing historian, but my impression of him was always somewhat heroic. He was a Jew, and was proud of it. Not an easy thing to do back then. I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

Bob, great pictures
