Curious, a quick question about interlace and 24pa

I have footage which I shot in 24pA and captured using Vegas6. The captured footage does not look interlaced on my computer's LCD monitor. When I render it as an mpeg-2 it looks interlaced though on my LCD, playing it using wmp and vlc player. When I author a DVD and watch the footage on a normal television I dont see any interlace problems. I was just curious as to why I see interlace on my computer screen? Thanks for any information.

It's because a computer screen is progressive and will reveal interlace artifacts, whereas your TV is interlaced, and it won't.

How are you rendering as MPEG-2? Are you editing in 24p?

Yeah im using a 24p timeline, when i render as, i select mainconcept, are interlace artifacts always going to be there because of the rendering from 24p to mpeg or is it just my footage is bad quality?

quick question is MC the only encoder avail for vegas mpeg-2?

ALSO now when I select something such as DVD NTSC or any other option, I cannot click the 'custom' button, its wieird, i even uninstalled and reinstaled vegas, if i change from MC to something like quicktime I can select the 'custom' button tho...any thought? thanks

The MainConcept encoder is the one which comes with Vegas, but if you install others, Vegas should be able to see them.

Don't know about the Custom button; it's never been a problem for me.

As TheMacB says, you want to make sure you're choosing the 24p options for your MPEG template.

What are you using to author the DVD?

I have a similar problem, but it happens when redering Progressive from Vegas. Ihave a 24p footage in a 60i timeline, and I render it out as 23.976 (IVTC Flim), Field Order - None (progrssive scan) .9 aspect ratio, Video Format - Uncompressed.

When I open the footage in another program (AE) it shows as being 24p (23-97) prgressive, but there are still interlaced looking "artifacts" during certain frames. It plays fine, and there is nothing wrong with the footage, but there are horizontal lines through it. Usually this happens only on the first or last frame, but sometimes once or twice during playback. There are NO interlaced artifacts during movement, everything is perfectly smooth. It's almost like a noise type artifact. Looks like this:

This was recreated in Photoshop, but that is very similar to the look.

This happens more frquently when the files are playing back in Vegas, with any/all of the different quality setings. It's farily minor, but I would like to know if I am exporting it incorrectly.

Thanks

I don't know, Rapier; I've never seen that happen. I'll have to see if I can replicate the problem.

But why, if you planned to render to 24p, were you in a 60i timeline?

Switch the project properties to 24p, render again, and see if the same problem occurs.

Because I thought it didn't matter. I thought Vegas didn't care if the timeline was 24p, or 60i, it would look at edit the same.

I'll switch it around and give it a shot.

It would matter because when you render from a 24p project, you don't have to worry about deinterlacing, but if you render from 60i project, you do. Vegas only removes pulldown on a 24p timeline.

I haven't had a chance to look at this in Vegas yet, but I'll see about getting to it this evening.

Cool thanks Dave.

Maybe a tutorial on exporting 24p . . . . . .

(hint hint, nod nod, wink wink)

OK, I tried to replicate the problem, but I couldn't.

Could you list exactly what you did (24p? 24pA? Standard NTSC DV project settings? What were your render settings, exactly? Incl. file type, of course) -- because I'm not seeing this problem with any way I've tried to produce it.

Shot 24p (mod of F5 Scene) Catptured in Vegas. Exported from vegas as IVTC Flim, Progrssive scan, .9 aspect ratio, Uncompressed.

Opened and edited as Uncompressed 24p in AE.

That's about it really. Those lines just appear, usually at the end or begiining of a file.

OK, I followed that exactly using standard 24p footage . . .

I get nothing but perfectly progressive files either way I render, from a 24p project or a 60i project. I've viewed them in Vegas, Premiere Pro 2.0, WMP, and QT, and there's no interlacing anywhere.

I don't have AE on this machine. But I wonder if it's an AE issue?

I dunno. Frankly, I am begining to wonder if it is a media player issue. Every video I play on all 4 of my comps plays dark unless you go into the Tools>Performance>advnced, and disable "use Overlays". Weird.

I'm having a similar interlace problem. I'm rendering to .avi and when I play it back in media player I'm seing interlacing. I've experimented w/ a bunch of different settings. I've never had this problem before, am I overlooking something?
