capturing final edit from miniDV, outputting to DVD

Hey guys,

I just finished editing a music video that I printed to video onto a miniDV tape, which is going to be color-corrected and given back to me on another miniDV tape. I then want to make DVDs (both playable DVDs and data DVDs) of the final project from that miniDV tape.

When I get the tape, what settings should I use to capture the footage into Final Cut? What should my sequence preset and capture preset be? The footage was 24p.

And what settings should I use to then export the project if I want it as clean and uncompressed as possible?

Thanks so much!

What is your sequence set to? (29.97 or 23.98)
If you're going back out to MiniDV it will end up back at 29.97. If your sequence is 29.97 (no pulldown removal on 24p footage) then that will be just straight output to tape.
If you have a 23.98 sequence:
Check your playback settings. Normal output should be 2:3:2:3 In this case you just recapture with normal settings. 29.97 and put in 29.97 sequence.
Technically if you want to get back to pure 23.98 (assuming you did a pulldown removal and edit a 23.98 sequence) then you could output 2:3:3:2 and then re-capture with advanced pulldown removal but some people haven't been able to get that to work according to the posts.

Consider a DVD data disk or FireWire drive to trade data. Less hassle and less possible problems.
Everytime you modify and re-save the footage as MiniDV then it will lose at least a little quality. If you put in transitions and then pass that to someone who does full color corrections and then back it will have been re-compressed 2 times.
Least compression would be animation codec. Do a short test for your needs to see if it's worth the effort (much larger files, rendering times)
If you can do the color correction and transitions (or other than pure cuts) all at the same tiem then you avoid another compression step.

Thanks for your reply. The original sequence was set to 29.97.

The color-correction was already done, so I'm going to be importing it from miniDV back into FCP, then hopefully exporting to a QT movie I can put on DVDs.

So I'll keep my sequence preset at 29.97 and import the footage. Then export using what? Export->Quicktime Movie->Current Settings? Or Export->Quicktime Movie->Custom-> and set the compressor to "None"?

Thanks again!

It will be in your machine in DV format (since you're capturing a DV tape) so just export using Compressor for best quality DVD. Import that into DVD Studio. DV -> Animation/None -> DVD won't be gaining you anything.
