Do you view actors differently because of their views or personal life?

This is not a question of politics and I'm not here to talk about that, but do any of you view actors differently because of things they've said or done in the past or present? My father doesn't like certain actors just because of things they've said. My question is what does an actors merrit have to do with their actual acting. I believe alot of people are like this.
My dad works in the casino buisness and sometimes deals with high rollers, and he once said a certain actor was a total a$$. I understand that but I think you have to understand that these people get mobbed every day and I think it tolls on their "mental health" they must go insane.

but is it really a reason to dislike an actor?

I love Arnold Schwarzenegger for his movies, but I don't like him as the person. and I'm content with that.

Another good example is Tom Cruise, I can't STAND him. With the whole scientology stuff, but I would pay to see his movies.

This is actually a good question. My father for example refused to see '6 Days 7 Nights' because of the whole Anne Heche lesbian thing. He said that he had no interest in seeing a Harrison Ford movie because it was no longer believable for him to see Anne Heche with a man. I think that there are several examples of this, especially when it comes to an actors sexuality. Not that she was ever a looker or someone I wanted to see, but remember Rosie O'Donnell was in 'Exit to Eden'.

For me, I might judge an actor based upon things I hear from their personal lives, but it normally doesn't affect whether or not I will see their films. As you stated, Tom Cruise is an excellent example. I have not been a fan of his for a while, but I actually like his films. Brad Pitt is another. I think that he is this Hollywood fan boy who is only interested in who he is hanging out with, which cause he is involved with, and how soon he can get his name tattooed on another actress, but films like Legends of the Fall, Se7evn, and Fight Club are great films (in my opinion).

In general, yes, an actor or an actress, just like anyone in the public eye, or even another member or this board who is vocal in their opinion is going to generate some sort of sentiment from people who hear this person speak (or type). Whether you allow your feelings about that person to influence whether you want to see their work or read their thoughts, well that is just a personal stance each person takes...

I don't know, my $.02.

Well, all I don't like is when Actors get into politics, that upsets me, and its a wrong move.

To be honest, I still like Arnold, I think hes an idiot, but its okay, I can't dislike him, but then their are people like Jessica Simpson, that go around and talk about how good our president is, when 70% of this country is against that president.

Interesting question

I can't say anything an actor does will prohibit me from catching one of their shows. One thing I dislike is when they jump on their soapboxes (Sarandon and Robbins, Pitt, Clooney, Penn, Garofalo, Rosie O'Donnell AKA Mouthy - Pig )

I don't think these people live in reality and should just shut the **** up and make movies. It's not that they cannot have an opinion I just can't say they speak for us (us not being the celebrity royalty gazillionaires that live in la la land).

In cases like Arnold or Eastwood for that matter, I actually respect more for actually doing something about it and getting involved instead of running the mouth and doing nothing.

Celebrities like Angelina Jolie who seem to put their money where there mouth is and are going out and doing something about it with her humanitarian efforts I can respect.

The Tom Cruise thing.

I don't get this perceived public hatred towrds the guy. Yeah, he acted like a kook on Oprah, ran his mouth about drugs (Which I, in large part agree with in general terms and is another conversation) but I think he has been branded and torched over behaivour that wasn't that crazy.

If anything has been made into such a big deal it is that issue. I like Cruise and can give a **** how he acts. At least he isn't running around tellling the government how to run the country like these other clowns.

So, in the short end of the long I say:

No, it does not influence me with their artistic work but I do tend to look at them different with a sort of 'Shut the **** up Clooney...' attitude.

Well, I hate to say it but on a couple of occasions I have allowed what an actor/actress has done or said to color my opinion enough that I have a VERY HARD TIME watching their films. It's only happened a couple of time, usually I can get past it but in at least 4 instances that I can think of, it spills over into their movies. I really wished it wasn't so but it is.

I've noted a couple of people here don't like certain directors so they don't like their movies. I amounts to the same thing for me.

EDIT: I wished you post had been up before I started mine, John. I agree 100%. Even those actors that I have a problem with, I have still watched SOME of their movies. But it's still hard to get past stupidity.

The only time I eschew an actor/actress/director is when they are involved with something that I view as immoral or just plain stupid. I don't usually care what their political leanings are, but if they're a total idiot like Jessica Simpson or Rosie O'Donnell (Mouthy Pig is such a better name) I don't care for them.

So, people that are involved with sweatshops, or ripping people off...that's not my thing. I won't wear Nike anymore, nor will I shop at Wal Mart for these same reasons.

I have no problem separating even the most extreme of "soapbox" performer from their respective work. There is an invisible line that a handful of celebs have crossed (IE Jane Fonda) that make it difficult to disassociate them the person from them the actor/actress/singer. The latest of these dandies is Charlie Sheen. Who is now saying that, in his opinion, the 9/11 attacks were an "inside job".
Sheen described his immediate skepticism regarding the official reason for the collapse of the twin towers and building 7 on the day of 9/11.

"I was up early and we were gonna do a pre-shoot on Spin City, the show I used to do, I was watching the news and the north tower was burning. I saw the south tower hit live, that famous wide shot where it disappears behind the building and then we see the tremendous fireball."

"There was a feeling, it just didn't look any commercial jetliner I've flown on any time in my life and then when the buildings came down later on that day I said to my brother 'call me insane, but did it sorta look like those buildings came down in a controlled demolition'?"
Apparently, he went on to say that he felt that the Pentagon, as well as the WTC attacks were staged.

Sorry Charlie.
You just crossed that line in my book.

I have heard of this Sheen thing and am reserving opinion; not because I believe a word of it, but because I think this is the worst adminisration and biggest foul-up of a president in the history of our government.

But we just crossed the no political talk with these last two posts haven't we ?

ive always been of the opinion that if tom cruise had not been in so many goddamn good movies he would have been committed years ago...

it's funny how people forget, ol Jane sitting on big viet cong gun and laughing whilest our brothers and fathers are being shot at with same gun. what did she ever do but shoot off her mouth and marry Hayden whose views were questionable imo, but at least he was doing something with his beliefs. then she marries a millionare who has tv influence....the news. yeah i agree with you John do something without the headlines, JOLIE can't get into her but i respect her honesty and her heart to do something and not just talk about it. one thing NIKE did is that saying JUST DO IT!

I've been guilty of letting how I feel about an actor get in the way of my liking their performances. I've never liked Cruise, but I love him in A Few Good Men. The fact that he's a nutjob doesn't change that.

It is beyond me why she was never prosecuted for treason.

Not for nothing, John...but why? I don't consider Sheen's unfathomable comments to be a black and white - red and blue - right and left thing, but more of an idiotic - black helicopter - conspiracy theorist - nutjob thing. Not unlike the prick that accosted Buzz Aldrin with his nonsensical bullshïte, in fact...only worse because of the victims involved and their widows/family left behind.

Maybe, for just one day in the near future, we could lift the ban on 1 outta 3 of the DVXuser taboos (I'm of course referring to politics, not porno...though porno would be...ah...nevermind.)

Because for better or worse, in this case DEFINITELY worse, celebrities of all stripes seem to get a pass for stupidity, regardless to what it pertains.

Watching? Not usually a problem.

Of course most of the idiots...I don't watch, anyway because they're just not all that good to begin with.

Which is probably more than half the reason they run their mouths. Otherwise they'd become yesterday's news.

Now working with... That's a whole other story. There are more than a few that I would never use no matter how could they or how right for the part they might be.

No one (with a brain) ever said that free speech didn't have consequences.

(I'm sure they're all crying themselves to sleep over it, too.)

Very good point.

It doesn't matter to me what people do (for the most part), as long as they're talented. I can't stand certain actors because I think they're talentless fools, not for things they've said or done.

Robert Downey Jr. is a moron in my opinion, but he can act. He has a brilliant sense of timing. I hate the things he's done in his personal life. Anyone else would be in prison for life.

I don't buy all the Angelina Jolie humanitarian bullshit. There's doing something nice, and then there's doing something nice so other people will say "aww that was nice". I'd rather someone be a sincere asshole, than a fake goodie twoshoes. Angelina Jolie's face screams sincere asshole.

Jane Fonda, how can you all forget about her workout videos? That alone should make up for all the negative stuff she's taken part in. Just kidding! hahaha

Off topic

I agree on that note. I love Downey's work. Why a junkie like him continues to get another shot is beyond me though. Sober since 2002 ? Only time will tell.

Like actress Winona Ryder ? I wouldn't hire her theiving ass.

Pisses me off celebrities get treated differently.

It all comes down to if their publicity speaks louder than or on the same par as their acting. Sure Tom Cruise is in some great movies -- but when it comes down to craft, he's not terrible, but he's no Deniro and he's no Hoffman, which is why he's getting so much negative attention.

But then there is Downey Jr., who has screwed up on so many occasions, but the people stay behind him because he has some really amazing talent -- and it's all natural.

On the other hand, I find myself hating an actor or an actress simply because of one role, or simply because of their demeanor in something as simple as a normal talk show interview.

Sure Tom Cruise was absolutely ridiculous, but with that I tend to just sit back and say "wow" and let it slide, because at least he is passionate about something. But when I see Hilary Swank sounding like a complete crap coming out ofthe academy's ass in her award's speech, I just want to kill her. I think being a theatre student has caused me to DESPISE phony people with phony personalities, even more than the crazies.
