Ok this poll should be fun, I’ve been thinking about this for a while. In your opinion, which decade pumped out the best films? In my opinion I feel the 80’s had some of the best films ever. The 80’s films just had a special thing about them, they were just so original and fun. Now of course other decades had great movies too and some even had classics, but none compared with the steady flow of great movies that came out in the 80’s. So let’s start this discussion, choose your decade and give some examples.

And sequels should not count as a selection in your decade, unless of course it’s a sequel in the same decade. Ok hope that wasn’t too confusing, but here are some great ones that came from the 80’s and I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more I’m not listing.

Die Hard
Weekend at Bernies
Batman(Original)
Blade Runner
Ferris Bueller’s day off
Space balls
The Lost boys
Rainman
Young Guns
When Harry met Sally
Bill & Ted’s Excellent adventure
E.T
Fast times at Ridgemont High
The Terminator
Sixteen Candles
Back to the future
Scarface
The Breakfast Club
Weird Science
Platoon
Aliens(Yes the first one was Release in 1979-Close enough to the 80’s, sue me!)
Full Metal Jacket
Dirty Dancing
Stand by Me
About Last night
Fatal Attraction
Pretty In Pink
About last night

Ok, that’s all I could think of right now! Shall we begin

Nice thread, capital.

But, Come on...
There are up to ten poll options available. Why not phrase it with every decade from the 30's thru today?

My vote is for the 1940's by the way.

Okay, I'm going to add more to this list later, but I think film in the 1970s [generally] had better story than anything produced later. I'm not a huge fan of the hot, flashed 1970s "look", but I think story is always a higher sorting criteria.

JAWS
The Godfather
Midnight Cowboy
The Last Picture Show
American Graffiti
Chinatown
Nashville
All the President's Men
McCabe and Mrs. Miller (there's that f-ing flashing again)
Day of the Locust
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
Harlan County, USA
Star Wars
CETK
Deliverance
Taxi Driver
Apocalypse Now
Hearts of Darkness - A Filmmakers Apocalypse (okay, not really legal, but it was shot concurrent to the AN show)
French Connection
The Conversation
Patton
The Conformist

Greatest year for movies, ever: 1982.

I give it the nod over 1939 because of sheer volume of memorability, as opposed to just having a few greats.

mines present day....perhaps i'm crazy.

I just think we have alot of good directors working in thier primes.

tarantino, rodriguez, shyamalan, Jackson, and Speilberg is still putting out amazing stuff as well. Its a good time for movies.

M*A*S*H (1970)

Kelly's Heros (1970)

The French Connection (1971)

I figured "none of the above" covered the rest of the decades...

My vote is to the '40's, roll in 1939 with a tad of 1979 and we're good!

1982 was a huge year for me Cinemawise. I had just come off of 1981 whereas I was 11 years old. I had seen Raiders of the Lost Ark and had just now realized there was someone called the director responsible for these magical moments.

A few films other than Raiders that hooked me in 1981 were:

For Your Eyes Only
Taps
An American Werewolf In London
Halloween II (Very underrated)
Friday the 13th Part 2
The Howling

But like David mentions; 1982 was indeed a magical year in cinema for me ! As I watched these films I realized someone made these and this is what I want to do.

John Carpenter's The Thing
The Road Warrior
E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial
Porky's (Yes, Porky's)
Poltergeist
First Blood
Blade Runner (although still not obsessed with it, Han Solo was in it!)
Night Shift
Creepshow

------------------

Alas, I will vote for the 1970's as being the best decade of filmmaking. Just these films alone are epic to me. The ones in bold are on my all-time favorties list while the others listed I consider memorable and remain guilty pleasures.

JAWS
The Godfather
The Godfather II
American Graffiti
Chinatown
All the President's Men
Star Wars
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Taxi Driver
Apocalypse Now
French Connection
The Conversation
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Deer Hunter
The Excorcist
Rocky
Saturday Night Fever
The China Syndrome
1941
Halloween
The Amityville Horror
Assault on Precinct 13
Jaws 2 (Yeah, so... ?)
Logan's Run
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
A Bridge Too Far
Mad Max
The Spy Who Loved Me (First movie I ever saw in a walk-in theatre)
Car Wash
Papillon
The Poseidon Adventure
Orca (Yeah....so?)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Salem's Lot (made for t.v. but I have to list it)
The Deep
Soylent Green
Suspiria
Dawn of the Dead
Earthquake
Grease
Towering Inferno (Love those Irwin Allen films)
Force 10 From Navarone (It had Han in it)
Piranha
Young Frankenstein
The Last House on the Left
Empire of the Ant's
The Food of the God's
Smokey and the Bandit
Killer Fish

And there you go.

* BOLD indicates all-time Favorite's list

I'm guessing you mean how many great films in one decade? because they all have some of the best films ever made.

1939 - Gone with the Wind
1941 - Citizen Kane
1952 - Singing in the rain
1962 - Lawrence of Arabia
1977 - star wars
1982 - E.T.
1993 - Shindlers list
2000 - requiem for a dream

I mean I could fill out this list with dozens and dozens of films from each decade... Maybe what the best year for film was cause I know there's been some real great ones and crappers

Oh man, the 70's is winning this battle I can't believe it... I have to admit though, some great films were made in the 70's but the 80's still rule!

The 70's, though every decade has it share of fantastic films. A lot of great films already mentioned, here's some more:

Dog Day Afternoon
The Devils
A Clockwork Orange
Lenny
Cabaret
All That Jazz
The Long Goodbye
Annie Hall
Manhattan
Deep End
Days of Heaven

Halloween II (Very underrated)

I agree.

That's so hard to say. I loved the grit of 70's cinema, and yes the stories did seem to be deeper. The 80's were a bit cheesier and far more commercial, but I loved them.

I loved the 90's. Geeze louise I loved the 90's. Not just film, but many different aspects of the culture.

The Crow
T2
Titanic
Braveheart
The X-Files (ok not technically "movies", but they're better than most movies and they were shot on 35mm)
Coppola's Dracula
The Matrix
The 13th Warrior
Interview with the Vampire
Tim Burton's - Sleepy Hollow
Edward Scissorhands

Ok, I think I'll offically vote for the 90's.

I've honestly never thought about which decade had the best movies--I never thought about movies in concurrence with time. I just took good movies as they come. But when looking at them chronologically, i'd say the 70's had the most powerful, and the 80's had the most enjoyable.

I'll tell you, The Deer Hunter ****ed me up for a while. Ferris Bueller's Day Off, on the other hand, lifted my spirits.

Has everyone forgotten the sixties? Here's a sampling:

Psycho 1960
Ocean’s Eleven 1960

The Hustler 1961

Lawrence of Arabia 1962
The Manchurian Candidate 1962
