A History of Violence DVD - GREAT features!

I thought Cronenberg deserved a best director oscar nod for his work on "History."
TOTALLY agree with you on this one, what's up with that? No acting nods either (aside from Hurt's cameo) was pretty much a slap in the face too. Apparently the Academy doesn't take the man seriously.

I counted it out today, Hurt had a little less than nine minutes of screen time.

I'm no scholar of the Academy Awards, but a best supporting nod to someone who was on for that little of time seems somewhat extradordinary. I'm glad he got it, but it would've been nice to see Viggo or Maria Bello get a nomination too. And Cronenberg as well. The first shot of the movie is a testament to his deserving a nomination, I think. It was different and well done.

I went out and picked it up. The movie is fantastic, and the special features are really inspiring. I want to go shoot something now!

I know there's quite a few people who attended crappy screenings of this flick because the other people in the audience couldn't handle it like adults. I'm glad that I can watch it in the comfort of my own home now.

I will need to send my daughter out to get this one for me. I cant stand it any longer. I was one of the people who sat thru a lousy screening because morons brought their prepubescent offspring to the movie. :furious3: :furious3: I look forward to this one at home, as well. Cant wait till my girl wakes up....its 10:00am for crying out loud!

I went at the best possible time: Sunday at around 6 o clock. It's all old people who know what they're getting into. The only bratty kids sneaking into the movies were.... well, it was me, except I'm not a brat. Just a fan of Viggo.

I went, however, mainly in response to another bratty kid in my class saying it was "the worst movie ever" and to not see it. That being said, I automatically saw it, and realized to not heed the advice to not see it when it's getting stellar reviews from critics. I'm only heeding the "don't see it" advice should the words "The," "Fog," and "(2005)" appear in the title (i'm a fan of flogging dead horses, but the movie was really bad, and i haven't seen many other bad ones as of recent).

It's pretty lame if you can't conduct yourself well at a movie theater. Really lame. I remember a screening of King Kong that made me want to kill myself. Teenaged girls shouting "holy ****" at the bugs, and people actually laughing at the comment, when it was supposed to be a tense moment in the movie. I would have thought that that would reflect the effect the movie had on people, but I knew the right audience was way into it.

I'm with ya on not liking it - although now I'm pissed that I sent it back to Netflix already w/o checking out the special features. Sounds like it's full of good features - I just never seem to check them out if I don't respond to a film. Like Bubble - couldn't really care how he made it - cause I didn't like it anyway.

I freaking loved the movie. The special features were MONEY.

I watched all of them, and it was just really cool to see how he leaves things open for interpretation but is also open to ideas himself.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED ONE PART where he said something about how actors will sometimes beg to be micromanaged because they don't want to put thought into what they're doing, and he loves the actors he just gives a shell to and they fill up that shell with their own spirit.

I wish i could find actors/actresses who did that.

Thanks for the info.

I would have bought the DVD anyway, but the extras are very informative.

Also, it's rare to get a Cronenberg commentary.

gosh, am i the only one who didn't like this movie
No. No, you're not.

With all the rave reviews and uber-praise, I was beginning to feel that EVERYONE was in on an elaborate early April Fool's joke on me. I just don't get this film's appeal one bit.

Let me just say that I am a fan of Viggo, Harris and Bello; and have appreciation for Cronenberg's unique style. That being said...this film was the biggest letdown for me this side of Congo.

I'll admit that the graphic special effects makeup was both impressive and bar-raising, but the story fell short IMO. And WTF is the deal with Hurt's being nominated for best supporting actor? Are you kidding me with that?

What is it that has captivated you all so much?
