Can 'out of focus' footage be salvaged?

Hey all,

I recently completed my first feature film in which I wrote, produced, directed, and edited. Sadly, however, since I did not DP the film, I only found out in the editing process that my DP shot an entire scene out of focus.

(Go to www.downhillthemovie.com in the 'media' section to see the footage, although I'm not sure how much of the out of focus stuff is in the trailer.)

I heard After Effects can actually clear stuff up? Is it possible or even necessary?\

Thanks guys,

Shane Bissett

Look for an "unsharp mask" in the effects section. Gotta go subtle with it, though. Low numbers.

If your NLE doesn't have one, you could export frames and do it in PS or PSP, then reimport them.

outlook not so likely. Even with an unsharp mask, you are, in effect, using complex algorythms to try and recreate information that simply isnt there.

Focus is somewhat relative if within reason. that is, if a whole scene plays soft, you may be able to get away with it. But if one shot is soft and the rest are critically focused, than that soft spot will leap out painfully to the viewer. And unfortunately, with all of our technology at hand. A reshoot is still the best bet.

And man created Pick-ups :)

the chances of salvaging out of focus footage in post are slim. after effects can do some great stuff, but they can't really solve that. you can play with unsharp mask, but it's not going to look like it was shot actually in focus, probably not even close.

in any case, your trailer is really funny. it's an amusing concept.

I agree. :) Man that guy has some chops.

Aren't you the guy who plugged this film a few weeks ago with two posts?

Since he only has two posts as of now, one of which is for this thread, it's hard to imagine he'd be the same guy plugging the film with two previous posts ... unless he's created yet another username.

Unsharp mask ... is it just me, or does that sound backwards? If you want to sharpen something, shouldn't it be called a sharpening mask, or something else to that effect?

The two threads were deleted because they got too abusive.

It just got heated because the two posts (by the same person) basically promoted the same film, but by deceiving the users.

Let sleeping dogs lie.
