Top 10 Films of 2002...

I HATE musicals. Nothing breaks the spell of a movie quicker for me than a song and dance number. That said, I loved Chicago...
Chicago is an exhilarating work of beauty...but, then again, I love musicals. Scratch that. I love GOOD musicals like Singin' in the Rain, An American in Paris, The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Guys and Dolls, My Fair Lady, On the Town, The Sound of Music, Meet Me in St. Louis, High Society, The Band Wagon, Top Hat, and Take Me Out to the Ballgame...
And I put both Chicago and Moulin Rouge! in that category.

While all those musicals are classics, I'm just not wired that way. Add The Wizard of Oz to the good list, though.

Hey, you missed Paint Your Wagon  :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Easy Cowboy.

John, come on, I did use a smiley. It means I'm friendly and non-aggressive. :furious3:

I know exactly why Signs is high on my list. It played on my fantasies. What child hasn't dreamed of Alien Invasions ? This film did it right. It was good times.

Sometimes you just gotta be entertained.

I love alien invasions, which is why I watched Signs in the first place. But it failed at everything. Nothing remotely interesting, mysterious, or frightening -- nothingness. The characters are one dimensional. Phoenix and Gibson as brothers -- get real. Everything in this film is silly and phony and unimaginative.

Remember Close Encounters? -- that's how you make an alien film. Remember how complex Dreyfus' character was, remember the tension and fear and wonderment? That's a movie that does it right. Signs is a joke. Gibson and Phoenix I'm sure are embarrassed they ever agreed to be in that movie. Signs is on MANY worst films lists, so I'm far from alone in my opinion.

And I see John has "Ghost Ship" as an Honorable Mention for the best films of 2002. And you guys make fun of me because I like Solaris and Y Tu Mamá También??!?

Rich...

We Were Soldiers has not only slid into the spot of best Vietnam film IMO, I would even put it on the overall list of all-time best war films.

It shows the fight itself in all it graphic glory...but what this film effectively shows where many others fail is what is being fought for (country, family, honor, etc.) back on the home front.

No no no. This film was killer. Who wasn't scared when Mel was in the Corn Field ? Or when they chased the 'Brother's' around the house ? What about the opening scene alone when Mel goes out to see what his kids and dogs are trippin on ? What about when they show the alien for the first time on the CNN at he little Mexican Birthday Party ? How about the radio frequency of the baby walkie talky ? One dimensional ? Did you even see the film ? How about the monologue from Mel on his thoughts on death ?

Mel and Phoenix as brothers ? What does this even mean ?

I can agree the film fails in some areas and we debated at great lengths the water and the ending but to say "But it failed at everything. Nothing remotely interesting, mysterious, or frightening -- nothingness. The characters are one dimensional. Phoenix and Gibson as brothers -- get real. Everything in this film is silly and phony and unimaginative. " is absurd.

Hey, I dig Close Encounters (all time list for sure) but I'm tired of the friendly alien routine. Coming from the Solaris fan I can barely comment.

I only made fun of you for liking Solaris (not Y Tu Mama Tambien). But they are indeed guilty pleasures which defies all logic. I mean, hell, you like Solaris.

i couldnt stop giggling through out this movie. to me it was filled with lots of corny/cheesy moments. i dont think mel pulled that roll off at all. i like him as an actor, just not in that roll.

the photographer montage at the end put it over the top for me....it was totaly cheese ball....IMO...the scenes with the ladies back home doing the whole mail thing was just a bit much. the fighting scenes were well choreographed though...i always knew what was going on so thats good...

different director and a different lead would have made this a better movie...it was cheesy in the way Pearl Harbour was cheesy.

yeah, i looked at IMDB before i posted....but still, no one saw black hawk down unill 2002...they just needed to sneak the premiere and a few advanced screenings in before the new year (late december). but wuteva...still putting it on my list as a 2002 flick...cause i cant think of anything else i want to add...minority report is pushing it.

Which is totally incomprehensible to me...

Solaris was an amazing movie experience for me....the dream sequences blew my mind...the atmosphere of it all was amazing to me.

but it just goes to show the difference in taste...some people love We Were Soldiers...some people love Solarice....

I can't see these two movies being mentioned in the same sentance.

I can't argue with that.
