Taste, which you all are lacking apparently. :)

Please explain what captivated you all with Signs. Don't be embarrassed.

Hopefully one day we all will refine our respective tastes to a more enlightened status...
Until you'll just have to deal with the rest of us tasteless schmucks.

Do you guys really think Scorsese should have won over Eastwood for the Aviator? I happen to think that while Aviator was extremely effective (it almost made me feel obsessive compulsive while watching it), Million Dollar Baby just seemed much better directed in shots and performances.

As for 2002, I really like the Two Towers and Catch Me if you Can, that's all I can really remember.

My Top 10 of 2002

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Signs
We Were Soldiers
Gangs of New York
Minority Report
The Pianist
Adaptation
28 Days Later
The Rookie

Honorable Mentions or Guilty Pleasures

Blade II
Reign of Fire
Ghost Ship

Well, I liked the Aviator. I liked Million Dollar Baby. I like Scorsese. I like Eastwood. It's a tough decision but I gotta go with Scorsese...

Probably for the same reason you're listing Solaris.

Easy Cowboy.

I know exactly why Signs is high on my list. It played on my fantasies. What child hasn't dreamed of Alien Invasions ? This film did it right. It was good times.

Sometimes you just gotta be entertained.

Personally, Aviator for me was a disappointment. Not saying it was bad, because it wasn't. It just wasn't Scorsese for me. And I'm not much of a fan of Leonardo. That's probably why Catch Me If You Can failed to impress me. Again, it was entertaining but just wasn't great.

I enjoyed watching both movies but they didn't take me to the next level. If that makes any sense.

IMHO Scorsese shoulda:

-won for Raging Bull over Robert Redford (Ordinary People) *Of course, my vote woulda been for Irvin Kershner (The Empire Strikes Back) but, alas, he wasn't nominated*

-lost for The Last Temptation of Christ to Barry Levinson (Rain Man)

-won for Goodfellas over Kevin Costner (Dances With Wolves)

-lost for Gangs of New York to Rob Marshall (Chicago)

-lost for The Aviator to Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby) *Of course, my vote woulda been for Mel Gibson (The Passion of the Christ) but, alas, he also wasn't nominated.

To sum up, two outta five he shoulda won.

Now back to the year at hand...

I have to agree more or less. Nice post Callaghan.

Goodfellas ruled. Period.

I found Million Dollar Baby overrated. It was okay.

That was fun mang! Loved it.
I had Reign of Fire on the short list that I narrowed down to 15 or so, but bumped it at the last second. It was a damned fun flick, and had effects that blew my mind to boot.

I didn't originally like Goodfellas. But it grew on me to the point where I feel it is Scorsese's Masterpiece.

We Were Soldiers is a movie that could have easily taken Best Picture.

It was a close call for me, too. And regarding S1m0ne, you should be expecting something from leftfield from me by now. ;) Same guy (Andrew Niccol) did Gattaca, another movie I feel has been somewhat overlooked. He is also credited for Story and acted as Executive Producer on The Terminal

I loved We Were Soldiers

Nominated for nothing. Yet, films like The Hours, Talk to Her, Chicago get them ?

Bastards.

I HATE musicals. Nothing breaks the spell of a movie quicker for me than a song and dance number. That said, I loved Chicago. And another musical from a few years earlier, Beauty and the Beast.

Agreed. If not for Chicago, I would have considered it the year's finest offering.
