Storage Ideas Instead Of The P2......

Hi all, A lot of HVX200 users are talking about the firestore 100 as a great way to store more time on to a hard drive instead of the not so recording friendly P2 card. But has anyone seen or heard of the CitiDisk HD . It uses a laptops hard drive which is self powered and runs of the firewire of the camera.... als they have the NNOVIA QUICK CAPTURE which is top mounted ( but im sure it can be mounted on a gimble ) . I beleave it can be used with both the HVX200 and DVX100

heres a link http://www.armatosvideo.com/pcatalogue.asp?tID=1342

Looks good but dont know much more on it. Has anyone used this type of drive to capture off the HVX200 or HVX200E????

Cheers

Soon to be the proude owner of a HVX200E

Is this the one that can only stream DV? Or something new?

well its model number HD makes me think it records HD but then again the reason i found this drive was becuase i seen it forsale with a HVX200 on ebay.... Its a lot cheaper then the firstore so i was intrested if anyone has it or is using it?

On the other hand it is way to expensive just for a dump drive. Let's hope the best, I need to record HD by end of April, and I don't want to rent P2 cards.

I'm with you Pascal. I need HD storage by the end of April and I don't want to rent or bite the bullet and buy P2 cards. Now if we can just get somebody to try the darn Citidisk out and give us a review...

I looked into this, and found two issues:

1) it runs off of power from the firewire port, which the HVX doesn't provide

2) While it says it supports the HVX, no where can I find any documentation that it will actually record in DVDPROHD. In fact, based on the ebay auction that comes bundled with it (and the claim of the super-long recording time), I would assume it only works with the HVX to record DV.

I don't think the Citidisk will do the job. If the Firestore is not out on time, I'll rent two P2 cards and some dumping device. Well, I will get the dumping device myself, as the P2 store isn't big enough. 60 Minutes of 1080p? Not enough. But you can't dump your P2 and record the same time, right? So I'll have to go with a notebook. So I really need the Firestore...

Besides size, why would someone buy the FS-100 when for the same price you could buy a nice laptop and have a monitor and 100GB of storage?

You get a monitor and a nice laptop for 2000$? And this laptop capturing is to complicated.

By the way, is the P2 store fast enough? I mean, when you dump a 4 Gig card then it is done under 4 Minutes and if you dump a 8 minute card, then it is under 8 minutes? God, I hope the Firestores comes out on time, otherwise this will be messy...

Citidisk HD has been brought up before. Do a search for it. As i recall it will not record DVCPro HD but rather just functions as a hard drive you can dump to.

P2 store seems to be amply fast and reliable according to users on the board who are currently utilizing it as a storage option. I personally think it is a bit too expensive and for my money would rather go with a new latop. The drawback there being having to deal with a bulky laptop as a permanent part of your shooting solution.

I have also heard of bugs with the Firestore however I've also heard more good reports then bad so take that as you will. It would be more convenient in terms of space and mobility.

I agree. Although, I've been reading about the Firestore being "buggy"... that might actually make it messier than P2...

No, it won't be messy, otherwise it would be out yet...

Just to keep things straight on this thread, some of the comments have jumped back and forth between the standard CitiDISK which is currently available and the CitiDISK HD which is not yet available. Some people in other threads have mentioned that the original CitiDISK had significant technical issues and wasn't a good product. The new HD version specifically records MXF and is meant to be used specifically with the HVX. There is an optional 3 hour rechargeable battery to answer the question concerning no power on the FW bus. I was at EVS recently and they were the first people to point the product out to me (they showed me Shining's web site), they seemed excited about it and thought it would be shipping late in March. It's already the end of March so I don't know what any real ship dates are.

Barry was one of the people who commented on the bad quality of the original CitiDISK.
