New Star Wars Revelations Trailer is Up...

Yeah, XL1s. They're saying they had up to 180 people on location at a time. Sounds interesting, even though I hate SW fan flicks. Downloading trailer...

Sigh

Once the actors start speaking it becomes evident doesn't it ?

Effects look cool as does some of the shots with set design and extras but at the same time looks lame.

I've had enough of the lightsabres and Jedi geek stories. Can;t I just get a Fan Film that happens to take place in that world ? Why does it always have to be a Jedi story ?

Pink 5 Rules !

Yeah, the audio is the primary give away. There was so much CG in there, it's hard to focus on and pick up camera cadence. The problem I always have with these isn't so much that it is always focused on Jedis, but that everyone looks like they're 12.

It's cool they got it made. Sad part is ... wow. Really really bad acting. Bad meaning high-school-play BAD, and that's baaaaad. Y'know they probably picked the best acting in the trailer too. If you don't have decent actors you might as well not even make it, or at least don't spend much money on it. Every actor I saw in that trailer had the horrid high-school acting vibe going on. You really appreciate good actors when you see how bad some can be. Actually you could tell they were bad actors before they even spoke, just by their body language and self-consciousness.

Yeah I followed this one for a really long time. I was all excited to see it.

Then I saw it...

This is a great example why a SW Fan Film shouldn't ever take itself seriously.

Wow. Someone just spent a lot of time and money making crap. Reminds me of Lucas.

That's a perfect definition of a fan film. :)

I think the best part about Star Wars and Trek fan films is that people actually complete them. They're usually pretty terrible but they have no lack of heart.

EDIT: Good production values. Looks like the acting is pretty amateur. Good VFX work, but bad music. I think fan films would be better off making original music instead of throwing on the standard Star Wars music. Whenever I hear the Star Wars music I immediately compare the film to the originals. Wish they'd used a 24P camera too. Very good execution though for a fan film.

On these, I'm more astonished at the production value than anything else. Granted, everything is SD, and that'll hide quite a bit, but that's just a toolbox issue, not one of the filmmaker's talent.

I really like looking at how "$20k" and a lot of elbow grease will now get you effects within a hole or two of studio-level par. Watch this one in particular again and admire their compositions. Not at all shabby. Are they parroting? Perhaps, but don't we all to a great extent? I'm always told my camerawork looks like 24... uh, is that a compliment?!

In my mind, what we can achieve in production value with the tools at our fingertips just puts another nail in the coffin of blockbuster-style filmmaking and more equity behind Francis Ford Coppola's vision for kids with video cameras running the place.

Story, acting and distribution are the only hurdles left between the brick and mortar studio system and a virtual one - and those can all be surmounted.

Agreed Overland. I too was thinking about how impressive and economical the tools are. They got great results with hard work and over the counter desktop tools.

It seems to me that they spent way too much blood, sweat & tears trying to mirror the Star Wars effects, and not nearly enough on the two most important elements...casting and story. Although the visuals sparkle, the acting is beyond sub-par and amateurish. I will never understand how filmmakers' priorities get so far outta whack. Without what is perceived as solid, professional acting in your film, the production value will suffer each and every time. This little ditty is no exception to that rule.

I agree completely. That's a lot of time and money and effort from a lot of people to make something so bad. But maybe this is what they were after. Maybe they just wanted to make something with interesting special effects and action. If that's the case, then they succeeded very well. If they were trying for a good, well-rounded sci-fi film well they should just count this as a learning experience.

Personally, I would've come up with an original story idea outside of the SW universe. If you're gonna go all the way like this, then do it on a film that you will have ownership over.

wow

wow

man i totally had the idea to do something like this! i remember being obsessed with the possibility of creating something in the star wars universe.

then i turned 13...
