48 Hour Film Festival

Any you guys ever done one of these? I'm about to pull the trigger on signing a team up for the Cincinnati Fest June 9th. Some old co-worker pals of mine were in the top 5 last year...winners won an HVX!!!

I entered last year and had fun, but we were less than thrilled with the way things were run on the local level. I can't bring myself to cough up the $100 entry fee this year... since it doesn't seem to cover much of anything!

That whole fest is just like the guess your age/weight guy at crappy fairs...

...its a profit deal.

That said a 48 hour film can either stimulate your creativity or burn you out. I suggest entering a local contest- a free one.

The official 48 Hour Film challenges seem a little pricey to enter. I have only been in a local low-cost version here in Phoenix, the Almost Famous Film Festival. Speaking in general, making a 48 hour film is a taxing, dizzying experience, and something every filmmaker should do at least once, for the experience of it. It's a fun team sport.

Interesting. I'm noticing that only a handful of teams that participated in '05 are coming back for '06. I'm young, stupid, and I've got nothing better to do that weekend, so I think I'll try it.

I have taken part in the NYC Midnight Madness competition (that is 24 hours).

It is insane, but I have seldom had as much fun.

It is a real team building exercise. :)

I've participated in two 24 hour Toronto Film Challenges, and will enter the 48 hour one in June as well. It's a lot of fun and is very intense. I agree with CMessineo.

I run a 24-hour contest called Mayday out here in LA. I've always felt the 48-hour contest is a bit of a scam, for two reasons. First, they charge a lot of money. Second, 48 hours is a lot of time to commit to what ultimately still isn't a very good movie. You get the same experience in 24 hours, but with much less commitment.

We normally charge $50 per team, but we're thinking of just changing it to charging a small ticket fee at the screening, which has been free up until now. Our costs do exceed what $50 per team brings in, but I think charging any more than that is sort of questionable.

The cost of the challenge here is $200 per team, for the 24 hour challenge anyway. If it's anymore for the 48, I doubt I'll participate. The 24 hour ones offer a great experience anyway.

Registration for New York is all filled up.

You can sign up, but you're put on a waiting list in case a team drops out.

I think The 48 Hour Film Festival is a cool event and it's extremely popular here in DC (where it started), but I'd agree that the entry fee ($125) is on the steep side. Especially since they don't throw a kickass party.

I know some people who have participated in it in DC and they loved it. I just joined a team for the one were having next month and I'm pretty excited.
