USB On-The-Go Enclosure that uses AA Batteries!

You know, you could actually get a project box from Radio Shack and make this unit work with "D" batteries... you'd get a much longer run time... though I suppose you'd have to lug around a bigger/heavier battery box.

Worth looking into at least.

I thought about that. Actually, I thought about creating a power supply for the other enclosures I've found. But the supply that comes with this enclosure is small enough that one could perhaps mount the entire unit to your tripod, which is a project I'll soon be working on...

Well yes, the Mwave one has LI-Ion batteries, but they aren't easy to replace in the field when you run out of juice during a shoot... The whole point of using standard AA batteries is that running out of power wouldn't be an issue.

The MWave one. .

has LI-ION batteries already part of the enclosure, comes with charger, case, cables and indicates when complete.. .Drive is additional. .

Is this the one that's been discussed in some of the other threads? The concern with this is battery life. 780 mA for the Mwave vs. 5600mA for a DVXuser battery...it would be great if something like the LCD adapter above could be configured for this. Any ideas?

Nice find, thanks! Now we only need to locate a drive that has both USB OTG and Firewire... Then we can do anything we want...

Even better: how about a 5.25" enclosure that uses USB On-The-Go and firewire. With that, one could use a removable drive enclosure from a desktop, and use standard desktop drives... You'd have essentially unlimited storage, for the cheapest possible prices. Of couse, it would take a much bigger battery pack than two AA's to power it -- the HVX battery perhaps...?

I think Barry mentioned 15 4 gig "dumps" on the MWave one with one charge... which is pretty darn good.

Here's another enclosure I found a while back with a AA battery pack...

From what I understand you can only do 15 partitions on a FAT32 formatted drive. So regardless how large a drive you have doesn't matter untill we start seeing much larger cpacity P2 cards. I believe each "dump" createa its own partition. So if you have one 4GB card, you can only get about 60gigs transfered to a drive.

I just got another 4gig card and I haven't tried, but what happens if I "dump" from both cards at once? Does it put both cards in one partition or make a separate partition for each card in the camera? Meaning I could only make 7.5 transfers to a drive with my 2 cards?

Still a little confused with this aspect.

From what I've read, it makes a seperate partition for each card, even if you have spanned clips across two cards. So the limit is still the same.

I'm ordering an mwave but I believe it's this box..

which could also use a 5v external battery pack if you lion is getting depleted. Probably could use the 4AA pack fine too.. I'd expect it would have no problem taking 6v. You could build a 4AA pack with a few parts from radioshack for under $10-

What I've been looking for is a USB-OTG drive with an LCD and folder browsing. I have seen a unit like this and it will also do two way copying, but for whatever reason it's max transfer rate was 2-4MB which wouldn't work in our situation.

I've was actually looking into designing a firewire power injector prior to finding out about the USB-OTG which I feel will be better way to go in the long run.

If there is enough interest, we can make some of these adapters and offer them for sale. It accepts the DVXuser or any DVX battery, and converts the voltage to 5.0V. Price should be less than $25.00:

Alternatively, we could offer the parts for a lesser amount.

This looks like a battery operated device that connects to two non On-The-Go USB devices - allowing you to copy the contents of one to the other.

That'll allow me to use my iPod as a dump drive...

I've seen several variations of this device. They're called a USB OTG Bridge, and they're very neat. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find one that is High-Speed USB 2.0 -- only "Full-Speed," which is limited to 12mbps. That would be too slow to be usable.

YES! I'll take one!
Let me know how I can purchase it.

i would really consider a battery powered enclosure as an alternative for now. unfortunately, the units mentioned in this thread aren`t available here in europe/germany.

does anyone know about a unit available for us euro users?

Mas I have been looking myself. seems all these shops in the States are self enclosed and won't ship outside the USA for some unfathomable reason.

Makes no sense as they loose sales because of it.

So has testing been done to find out the best device? I don't want to spend out on a P2 store, so lets here how anyone has got on.

There's a MULTITUDE of reasons why a store would NOT sell overseas: shipping (restrictions, cost, tracking, etc.), customs, returns, legality of selling item, fraud, etc. etc.

And by the way; it is NOT a thing unique to the USA at all.
