Hi guys, I'm at my lowest point, its been now nearly 8 months since I Graduated, and I have been applying since. I've had some feedback, a little interest here and there BUT no interview. Now I'm just pissed off, I read in the BBC News webpage that upto 60%~70% of Graduate Engineers where the Happiest group (because they got employment) that Just makes me even madder, WTF I'M an Engineer AND I'M NOT VERY BLOODY HAPPY THATS FOR SURE!! :furious3:

Anhar, that's a real tough thing. I'm here with you, bro! Hang in there. From what I have seen, you are quality.

Here is some advice from the Software Engineer:

1. Resume.

It must look good. If you have to sweeten it a little bit, then do so. Resume is like a candy wrap - should be very attractive without giving any idea of what the candy tastes like.

Is it OK to "imagine" things in a resume? I would say "YES"!!! You don't have to lie during the interview, but nothing stops you in your resume.

2. Get some lingo. Here in America you can't get a real interview without having a phone screening first. What about UK? If it's the same, then go to the Internet, get all the interview questions you can find for your field, then find all the answers to those questions and print them out. When employers call you have these printouts ready.

3. Create a "portfolio" if possible.

4. Create a web site with your credentials, achievements, etc...

5. Get good references.

6. Make sure everybody understands your sense of humor.

Good luck man!

Are there any positions open whereas you can work up into the desired role ?

Beats being unemployed outright.

Don't lie on your resume. It may come back years later to haunt you when you least expect it.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't put your experience in the best light. But don't out and out make up things. It could get you fired from a position later.

It's natural to feel down when you're out of work. But don't fall into the habit of moping around half a day before you do anything. And realize that whatever approach you've taken thus far doesn't seem to be working, so you'll have to try something else.

Your job #1 at this point is securing a job. That means every day you have to get up, get dressed up (shirt and tie) and go out job hunting. Take a day to critically examine your resume and revise if necessary, but get out and talk to people. Work the phone (any contacts that you have, former classmates, etc.). Talk to the place you graduated from. Most places have a placement service. If they don't have anything, hit the school up for a part time job doing something. Make cold calls with your resume. Sometimes you'll get lucky and they'll have something that just opened up and they haven't posted yet. Know something about what every place you stop at does (do your research on the web at night). It makes it look like you care about them, and separates you from the crowd. It also helps you tailor your pitch of yourself to what they need.

Lather, rinse, repeat. Be tenacious. Be upbeat (at least outwardly). No one wants to hire someone that looks lost and depressed.

Good luck!

Maybe try starting your own consulting company. Work on some cool project you've always wanted to work on. Then as time goes on, you have job experience that can go on a resume. Saying you were/are a consultant etc shows initiative. (Better than saying you couldn't get a job). You may not have made much money, but at least you'll be building some experience.

I'd be more interested in hiring someone who showed guts to go out on his own.

Hope this helps...

One way to gain experience is to volunteer your time to a charitable organization in need of the types of services you would like to render professionally. That also lets you make contacts you might not gain otherwise. Hang in there and do something you enjoy while you're looking for the right gig - it may be a long time before you find the time to do it once you start working. Good luck.

Anhar...it will all come together dude. Never doubt for one moment that every event in your life is not there for a reason. Ten years from today you will come across this post, laugh, and drop another cuban cigar in your pool by accident. You never, ever know what tomorrow brings. trust me on this.

Cheers Guys, you have given me a lot of boost, yup I gotta pick my self up and keep on fighting, thats the only way! :)
