When aquiring music rights...

this is a stupid question, but i'm just really curious.

when a movie has a song in it that comes up several times, kind of like a theme song or whatever, is there a name for that?

i just want to know how to word that when i'm inquiring about music rights acquisition, since i know i will want that in my movie. totally random... but hopefully somebody knows.

Sounds like you are looking for the movie "synchronization" rights. In other words, the right to use the music or song in a movie.

yes, but more specifically, repeating the same song in the movie. what's that called?

It really shouldn't matter because you are going to have a clause something like:

Licensor authorizes XYZ Productions to use or cause to be used the aforesaid musical compositions and recordings in conjunction with the aforesaid film production in any manner deemed fit including, but not limited to, the purpose of advertising and exploiting said film production and the right to license and distribute the aforesaid musical compositions in conjunction with said film production throughout the world in any medium or forum, whether now known or hereinafter created.

You are obtaining the rights to use the song/composition for you film and not limiting yourself to how many times you use it.

But if you're looking for something to call it, call it the "theme."

Not necessarily. There are different agreements available, usually. Just did a quick lookup on "needle drop" and one oif the loinks talked about their rates...things like so much for 30 seconds, etc. No mention of whether they are contiguous seconds.

And you also have to worry about how long the license is good for. There've been a number of films pulled/no-longer-releasable because the license expired.
