So Peter Jackson is producing Halo. I wonder how much involvement he'll have. What exactly does Peter Jackson know about the futuristic sci-fi genre? I mean maybe he's a closet gamer, but his past filmography sure doesn't hint at it (more on this later).
I think it's hilarious that they're making a movie based off a video game so clearly based off a movie (Aliens). That's basically Hollywood's wet dream ("We will never EVER create something original!"). So I know they're excited for it.
I do contend, however, that Halo the game was one of the 2 or 3 top gaming experiences I've had in my entire life (along with original Metroid - oh, the coolness of finding out there were secret places you could roll to - and Homeworld - nothing beats the mood of that game). It totally felt real. I was majorly disappointed in Halo 2 since they obviously cut it short to put more time into the multi-player (something i could care less about - but I know people die over). I was also sorely disappointed that after they so obviously scrapped the entire ending part of the story, they weren't dragged over the coals in the media. Everybody just smiled and was like "we have a new Halo game! Who cares if a third of it is gone?" Video games are not yet at the point where movie are, where every element of development is tracked. If that were a movie, they would've been bombarded by the media. As it was, the publicity people did a good job smoothing it over. I can't wait til they're at a point where they can't get away with that sh*t. Because I felt duped forking out 50 bucks for that game. And nobody wanted to take responsibility for it.
So anyway, does this movie have any chance at all of being good? Do you think they'll take themselves seriously (a la Aliens) or do the old wink-wink (a la Doom movie)? Have there been any good video game movies? I know the Halo team was big on only giving up their property to the best people in Hollywood. Which is why I think Peter Jackson was brought in (a producer in name only in order to look better to the Halo people -- "Hey Peter, if we give you 2 million dollars, can you just pretend like you're going to produce this movie?" What is Peter going to say to that? No? - Oh to be Peter Jackson)
Anybody "in the know" here?
