i'll try to give my shortest answer.

first play around with the image adjustments. I go with color balance, and it's nice because it lets you adjust shadows, midtones, and highlights individually.

after that i mess with the hue and saturation a bit.

then lastly i'll mess with brightness/contrast.

I get it as close as possible, then if I need to use brushes i'll make sure it's very very subtle. it really starts to look like a painting if I use those too much...kinda like mr steve irwin the croc hunter. the photos are just so drastically different it becomes very hard.

i find myself using the burn and dodge tools a lot. it will help the image look more convincing by making the light look more natural. of course, this takes a bit more skill because you're essentially drawing in the shadows and highlights.

there's lots more, but i can't really remember off the top of my head!
