Who have you met?

btw isnt weird we met rick flair. I wrestled his son and beat him. rick was coaching him. this was when i was in high school. its weird huh.

I met Ray Bradbury...perhaps the most INTERESTING person I've ever met. Full of inspirational stories for a writer.

I don't consider Atheletes celebrities personally although I can see meeting MJ would be sweet. The Doctor that delivered by son plays golf with MJ twice a year; does this count ?

-

I met Roger Staubauch and Craig Baynum (Former Boys')

-

I met Phil Nevin

-

I met Eric Dickerson (former NFL runningback)

-

I had a drink with Kool from 'Kool and the Gang'. That was interesting (We were standing in line at the Open Bar)

hm, i mostly meet the guys on the other side who dont get any credit, like compositers, FX guys, and the real spine of our industry. Although I have met Jean claude Van damn (embaresed to say that), George Ramero, and Tom Savini (but I met the last 2 cause we all live in Pittsburgh the Zombie movie capital of the world)

Rick Flair is this weird local celebrity, and I think that some athletes are celebrities... For example, I met Roger Clemmens, Yogi Berra, Derick Jeter, Joe Torre, Bernie Williams, Paul O'Neil, and about thirty other Yankee legends at a fund raiser two years ago for the Yogi Berra Museum. The trip was a present to my father for his birthday, but it was just incredible to bum about this ballroom and just walk through with only like 200 people and talk with all these greats.

Certain athletes reach celebrity status, like Michael Jordan (although I was never a fan).

Honestly, does an athlete need to appear opposite Van Damme (Rodman) in a bad movie to be considered a celebrity?

incidentally, i had a "sighting" this morning. on my way into my office I was at a red light behind a black ferrari (at third and fairfax for you Angelinos). i can see the guy's refelction in his rear-view mirror... and i thought to myself, "damn, that dude has a ****ed up face." a moment later, i realize i'm looking at Seal. it's "crazy", i know.

Chubby Checker - Met him two years ago while I was out at dinner. He was very cool and we sent him a drink, he nodded and came over and shook our hands, but we didn't ask for autographs.

Yeah, I met Chubby Checker too... forgot about that... he was at a candy convention.. Promoting some chocolate bar with his name on it... He was a real nice guy.

WTF ?

Explain!

My dislike of Jordan?

OK, I can make this a long story, short story, or book jacket story... I'm going to try for the book jacket and hopefully end up somewhere in the ballpark of the short story realm.

Anyone here who has spoken with me knows that in my house growing up the only stories I was told were about Mickey Mantle and the Yankees. We didn't have Where the Wild Things Are, The Giving Tree, or Alive in Wonderland. We had a big ballpark a mile from where we lived in the Bronx that was our temple and the center of almost all discussion in our house. When baseball season ended, the NY Rangers became the big topic of discussion, but that was a depressing existance (much as being a Yankee fan in the 80's and early 90's). I was never a big basketball fan until we relocated in NC in my early teens.

Basketball was huge here, especially college basketball, and in Charlotte people would get dressed up to go see the Hornets play and the house was always packed. This was the age of Jordan, Johnson, Bird. This was also the age of Jordan being bigger than life. Although I knew the history of the Yankees great winning history, I had never seen it personally with my own eyes, but I knew that Jordan was the best there was, and maybe the best there will be. Something about that fact, that this man is the best, made me just dislike him. I hated the man for his accomplishments and for everything else.

I never really grew to appreciate basketball, I don't even participate in the bracket thing that has been going on in my office, but at the same time, I do respect Michael Jordan and believe that he is the Roy Hobbes (The Natural - Best there ever was and will be) of basketball.

That all being said, I just don't like him for some lingering reason of my youth. There is just something about him that gets under my skin and frustrates me, and I don't know how else to explain it.

That being said, today at lunch I saw Larry Sprinkle, Charlotte's NBC weatherman. I told him I was involved in an online discussion about celebrities we have met and told him that I was going to mention him. He said thanks and went back to eating.

i grew up with jordan since 1985. he was awesome, and hes a really nice guy. like you think he would be something like arrogant or something he extreme nice.

lol there ARE no celebrities in Indiana. Letterman was from here, that's pretty much it. I hung out at the house of the drummer from Cheap Trick, and I met Steve Forbes' a few months ago. That's basically it. Sad. lol

Some day, I will meet Natalie Portman, though :)

By "Some day" he means i'm camped outside her house and by "meet" he means she will be locked in my trunk as I go down the interstate

I use to live in New Orleans back in 99'. I lived on Esplanade, and my bro lived on Louisiana Ave. I use to walk around that city like crazy (no car, didn't care much for trolly cars, plus I love me some walkin'). I ran into Anne Rice a couple of times. Once in the french quarter, and another time in the garden district. The second time she looked surprised to see me, like she thought I was stalking her or something. It was by complete accident. Then she smiled really big. She was very nice. Although she's much shorter than I thought she would be.
