Hi, anyone have any experience buying gear in Bangkok and can recommend any stores? I'll be living there for a while, and would like to know what the dvxuser community has to say about some of the stores there.....
d-mac - Don't expect to pay less for gear in Bangkok. Food, clothes, and common goods are real cheap, but electronics (computers, cell phones, etc.) are expensive here and sometimes more expensive than in Japan or the US. It might be cheaper for you to buy what you need in Tokyo. Not sure. As far as specific shops, I can't name any. There is a HUGE computer mall called Pan Tip that has all kinds of video and still photography equipment. That might be a good place to start. Other than that I'm sure there's shops that sell only videography equipment. I just haven't searched for any.
Let me know when you're going to be in Bangkok and I'll try and find out more before you get here. Do you mind if I ask how long you'll be staying and what you plan on doing while you're here (feature, short, documentary, etc.) Good luck!
I'll be in Thailand indefinitely (I have a daughter there and want to spend more time with her.) I've been working on productions here in Tokyo saving money to take care of her.
I haven't decided whether I want to start my own boutique production company there or if I'm just gonna work on productions. Any advice?
I love Tokyo and there is lots of work here, so I hope Thailand is similar.....of course, the pay won't be as good, I imagine.
I lived and shot in bangkok for a few months. There really isnt much as far as stores to buy pro-gear go, but from my experience the only pro shops i did find were inside of the MBK center, which is in Siam square. It's right on the skytrain, so it's easy to find. besides pro gear, MBK is pretty much the best indoor shopping there is in BKK. ah man, i miss that town.
Alternately, if you need something major, you can get a cheap flight down to singapore, where pro-video gear is everywhere. (check out sim-lim tower, in sing-town, but bring a local to shop for you or you'll get charged out the ass)
