First project with DVX100B and have some questions. Please help.

Alright I've read the manual on the 100b once from front to back and the same with Barry Greens book and I have a few questions:

1) How much does a CRT production monitor cost and where would I find one in Toronto area of Canada?

2) Is a laptop computer with DV Rack software a better way to go than a monitor. How much would a laptop PC with enough speed and video card and memory cost?

3) Is it true to say 1 hr of dv recording takes 13gb of space to store?

4) Does 24p automatically add 6 db of gain to the picture? Seems that at 2.8 Z99 there is noise and/or artifacts? Any suggestions and how to lessen that?

5) Does anybody have any experience with the manfrotto 117 legs? Mainly going to be doing docu's but hopefully some dramas later as well.

6) I have one hardwire sony lav mic and one sony omni directional. Will that be sufficient or should I look into a wireless and a shotgun? Which ones are good?

2) I would use a monitor if possible. A monitor has better color information. So I've heard.

3) Yes.

4) I don't know about the gain, but try setting the gamma to cine like (not D or V) and set the matrix to Norm.

Depends on size and manufacturer and lines of res etc. Expect to pay $1000+ for a halfway decent one.

It would be a different way to go. DV Rack is not a substitute for a proper production monitor, but a production monitor also doesn't do 1/10 the things that DV Rack does. If you could only have one or the other, I'd vote for DV Rack. A laptop that can run DV Rack can be had for probably no more than $600.

Yep.

No, no gain is added. But progressive-scan is noisier than interlaced scan. Interlacing allows the system to average noise across scans, progressive doesn't. Interlace also adds 6dB of sensitivity. So in interlaced mode the image will be cleaner and brighter.

What computer would you recommend in the $600 range for DV Rack (is that u.s. or can.)?

Why does the AGC say 6db in blue when I have the 100b in 24padvanced?

Blue means that it doesn't apply. Doesn't matter what the words say, as if it's in blue it's completely irrelevant to whatever shooting mode you're currently in.

Go to the Serious Magic website and look at the minimum system specifications, you should easily find many laptops that meet that spec and that price range. I'd recommend at least 512mb of RAM though.

Thanks Barry

Thanks Barry

Thanks Barry and I found your book excellent. Nice clean crisp writing.
