just got this one from my brother. it's pretty damned good. robert mitchum is particularly bad ass, and i love all that old forced perspective hollywood stuff -- i.e. going down river. the imdb trivia says to get that shot they used a midget/pony Mitchum double!! (which i think is just glorious.)

Something about that fake Hollywood-built navy-blue starlit sky makes me really happy.

awesome underwater shot of a dead girl too.

good get, adam. good get.

Amazing film.

Show's that even in the high days of the Studio someone was willing to think outside of the box of normally accepted themes for a narrative film.

Mitchum is also one of my all time favorite villains.

Was this one mentioned in the film noir discussion that was had a while back? Cause the lighting certainly makes a strong case for that classification.

true, true, and true! awesome villain. and what a damned voice.
except, maybe a little too apple pie american for noir -- although it definitely has a case.

so good.

Mitchum was in a league all his own.

There have been very few actors who have been able to be so damned terrifying in their performance alone (Hopkins comes to mind as another.)

I mean poo poo...between this and Cape Fear, Mitchum has been responsible for many a blanket being pulled just a little higher come bedtime.

The Night of the Hunter:thumbup:

Edit: Film Noir?

Great movie, very dark and brooding cinematography. It is nice to see a studio willing to take the risk on something so dark.

Laughton's only film as a (sole) director. No idea why he didn't do more.

Scared the poo poo outa me as a kid. Took me years to figure out what that movie was....who remembers names when they're that young?

SO glad I remembered, finally.

Well, because the movie bombed. People just didn't get it. Maybe it was too dark, maybe the sets were too surreal and theatrical. But the reviews were so bad, he swore off directing. Ironically though, Mitchum said that Laughton was his all time favorite director.

I thought it was uber-creepy
