Best Adventure Film...

...Not to be confused with Best Action Film, or even Best Action-Adventure Film. No, friends, I'm talkin' your epic, swashbuckling, dashing, daring, elaborate, cliff-hanging, adventurous, journeyman hero here.

I tried to avoid films that blatantly crossed into the realm of other genres (As in Science Fiction, War, Spy, etc.) Granted, some of my picks may dab into other classifications, but overall are pure-blood adventures.

Think of it this way...
As a Rorschach test...or even better...as a word association exercise. Say the first thing that pops into your own film buff's mind. Ready?
Adventure film.

Edit #3: ...and again with Kimko and his suggestion of Treasure Island.

Arabia at #4??? After Temple and Robin Hood?

Totally can't agree with that. Arabia is second only to Raiders in these eyes.

the princess bride...
Another fine choice.

Hopefully no one agrees with my list 100%...
We're in the Film Discussion Forum, not the Film Dissertation one.

Fair enough, but I'll take the short odds that everyone is in agreement on #1 itself being Raiders.

Damn good call, Blaine.

...The Man Who Would Be King and Braveheart...
Both of which I'd label more epic/war (especially Braveheart...one of my overall favorites.)
Damn tricky business, this genre grouping.
Cheers

i think this is a generation thing...i'm 25 and i get the feeling i was just too young when these came out for RoLA to be the "definitive" adventure movie for me...

i dunno maybe i was too into star wars when i was little...

when you said adventure the first thing that popped into my head was princess bride, so i guess that makes it my #1...

*prepares for the beatdown of angry Indiana Jones posts*

Okay, perhaps Braveheart is epic/war but The Man Who Would Be King is straight up Adventure...Kipling. Check the IMDb listing.

Not to quibble with your choice of Robin Hood (1938) it is after all a classic, I prefer the following version of Robin Hood:

http://yoursay.imdb.com/title/tt0102797/

This movie kinda got SCREWED by Costner's horrible rendition. They were both made at the same time so the Patrick Bergin one was released on TV  Too bad. I loved the gritty feel. It transported me to the time. Another good Robin Hood was:
Robin and Marian http://yoursay.imdb.com/title/tt007...PTUwMHxjbz0xfGh0bWw9MXxubT0x;fc=24;ft=93;fm=1

Connery was on one hell of a roll in the early-mid 70s.

I'll try and not name what is already a great list of adventure films and instead put films that are near to my heart and that lodged into my brain as a child

By all means quibble with him...my money's on Errol though, that cat was a bruiser.:D
I haven't seen Bergin's portrayal in some time now...but you're right about it being top notch stuff.

Indeed he was...and that's another one I had on the list, but was forced to scratch it. Shorry, Sshean.

Yowza!

Black Stallion!

Excalibur! (love those green gels on the armor!)
And lets not forget the great, headache inducing ZARDOZ!

Man who would be King...DEF in the same genre as Raiders, I feel.

Raiders...only time Ford truly got close to Bogart Quality in performance. Outstanding

Speaking of Bogart: "Treasure of the Sierra Madre"!!!!!!

And for the esoteric minded adventurer,

"Meetings With Remarkable Men." D: Peter Brook

I really dug this as a kid as well. Zemeckis was on fire throughout the eighties.

Never heard of it. :D For myself, Star Wars is bigger than any one genre. Besides, "Adventure. Heh! Excitement. Heh! A Jedi craves not these things."

Impressive picks. I gotta see if Tom Sawyer is out on DVD.
