PC to Mac to PC to...

Long time PC/Windows user. Bought a Power Mac to try it out. Been using Vegas for editing and have been looking at Final Cut now. It has been a lesson in patience for sure. I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around Final Cut. It just doesn't seem as inviting. I like OSX just fine, but I'm not sure that I made the right decision. Maybe I need to give it more time. Anyone else have this dilemma?

Have you tried books or anything or are you just fudging your way through it? It's very easy and makes sense when you understand it.

I've been trying FCP on and off for about... um lets see - 9th grade, 10th grade so like 3 years - I just hate the interface, it's so retarded doing the "ins and outs" and I hate how large the snap is - you have a clip on the timeline literally on the other side of the screen and if you move it 3 pixels it SNAPS from like 900 miles away - and if you don't want the snap on all of the sudden it becomes a chore to put clips next to each other...

OH AND THE RENDERING! Jesus - I just want to work! That's the one big thing for me about vegas, no rendering until the end - you can always see what's going on with anything you're doing...

OH and the fact that I can have more than 8 points in a mask, that's ridiculous... why would apple only let you have 8? If you got 8 you obviously already have the code written to allow for more...

Sorry for my rant - I'm probably just *asking* for a flame war so Imma stop here and say "This is just IMHO"

Okay I'm done

Wow, we must not be using the same program! :) I've been using FCP for a while now and haven't experienced such pains as these. I can turn off snapping by just pressing N, and I've never had problems with the snap jumping across the timeline. That is what Snap is for, to "snap" to the closest clip, playhead, or marker, etc... Turn it off and you can line up clips just fine. I do it all the time.

In regards to rendering, I don't know what kind of hardware you using but the only time I render is when I'm done. I guess you would have to render a lot if you're running on a old G4 using uncompressed footage, but for DV it works great. I can it on my 667mhz G4 without any issues.

If you want more than 8 point masks there is are great programs for that...After Effects, motion, Shake, Flame, inferno, combustion...etc... FCP is an NLE, not a comp program.

Anyhow, if Walter Murch can cut with it, it works fine for me!

Go check out Apple's book on FCP. The advanced one is written in part by people from DigitalFilmTree and it has some great info and workflow stuff in there.

These are some great books. I know for some people (not saying anyone here) it's an ego thing and they figure the best way is to just work with it and figure it out. While that may work to some degree, you'll be missing so much that you could be doing that you may not even have thought about. The books come with DVDs and lessons that are easy to follow and quite informative.

I switched to FCE frome Premiere, and I like it a lot better. I found it VERY simple to get started on. I use a book called Visual Quickstart Guide to Final Cut Express. it helped a lot, but is not all inclusive.

As far as rendering, the only issue i have is that I need to render more as the files get larger, which would lead me to believe that has more to do with the processing power of my Mac than the app. But i coould be wrong about that.

FCP is really intuitive as far as editing suites go. I don't understand why you're having a difficult time with it. I'd advise getting some literature on it, and joining some FCP forums, if they have them.
