M2 Adapter-Which Lens is the best

Very true Derek. The Redrock forum is an excellent place to go if you are interested in learning about what can be done.

Don't forget, the demand for the M2 has been massive, and there is/was a 3 month waiting list from placing the order throgh to delivery. Don't expect to place the order and have it in your hands within a few days.

Second hand M2's have appeared on ebay, and sometimes in the classified section on the redrock forum. Keep an eye on that.

I have a 1:1.4 7.5-90 mm Fujinon lense (Modelname: S12x7.5-18 by Fuji Photo Optical) I cant say I really know which diameters the lense connector has...

It's a zoom lense, which as a detachable electric zoom-motor. Can that be used with the M2, or Letus35 and the HVX-200?

Sounds like that's probably a broadcast bayonet lens, which can't be used with any of the adapters that I'm aware of.

OK next question, instead of buying a $6000 HVX, I could buy a DVX100+Matte Box+M2+Nikon 50mm lense ofr the same cost almost. I mean If have that monster DVX, what would be the big downdrop of not owning a HVX. I mean I know the HVX quality is increidble but if I have a Nilkon 50mm lense I dont think anywone can tell the difference. What do you guys think? I shoot a lot of short films, commercials, and music videos. Thanks.

golden cam,
you will definately see a quality difference with the hvx/m2 versus dvx/m2 plus you wouldn't get the frame rates.

Amazes how awsome that damn DVX is haha. But thats a beautiful piece, very well shot. Looks very cinematic.

Okay, how big of a drawback is it to use the Canon lenses vs. Nikon lenses? From what I've read, the aperture adjustability is the biggest drawback. The reason I ask is that my girlfriend is a photographer on a Canon system and I'd like to be able to just borrow her lenses. If I buy new ones, it'd be great if she can use them too.

What do you guys think?

Also, has there been any final word on whether the M2 or the G35 is better?

Canon EOS lenses have no manual aperture control. They will always be wide open unless you perform a little trick, but this involves having an EOS body with you to set the aperture then removing the lense and putting it on your adapter.

I shoot Canon EOS, but I purchased Nikon manual lenses for my adapter. As a bonus, Nikon manual lenses work better on Canon EOS bodies than Canon EF lenses do :)

The guy who shot it is resonding to questions over at the Redrock forum. He is a Polish guy, fluent in English, who's work is top notch.

If yoiu are using an M2 I recommend you definately use the 15mm rods, and the mattebox will attach to that and not the Nikon lens.

Hey Steve,
Nice looking setup! What brand of matte box is that?
Also, is that white brick attached to the side of the M2 a battery?
Haven't seen that before. thanks!

I've noted recommendations to use 2.8 or faster lenses. However, I note the new 18-200 3.5 Nikkor zoom is really stirring up a lot of interest among photographers. With that range it sounds like it would be an amazingly useful tool. Just how much would you give up because of the speed? Apparently you can pick it up for about $600. I'd really appreciate the comments of you mavens who really know your glass and how it works with the M2.

Goldencam, yes thats my setup.

R Gale, the Mattebox is a Vocas 350. Fantastic bit of kit..
The brick attached to the side of the M2 by hair bungies is an external DVD 9v battery. I wanted to not have to swap out the small 9 volt internal M2 battery every few hours and this solves the problem and then some!!!!

It uses the external M2 plug, and by using this larger external battery, it spins the GG a bit faster. You can hear the difference by connecting and disconnecting the external battery, which lasts about 4-5 hours and is rechargable. Cost is around$42, so I got two of them and never have to take apart the M2 anymore. I think my idea went down very well as a lot of M2 usesers have now gone down this route.
