Best Sports Movies

Yankee, wish we could trade skill sets. I'm pretty confident with my short game - putting included. Love the game from 50 yards in. Love the game from the tee. My iron play, however, is absolutely TERRIBLE. I've even considered buying a 9 wood - the ultimate grandma club.

Haha!

I love the short game. I'm up and down within 2 or 3 usually

Off the TEE is an expereince for me. I can launch them but look out on the Slice side.

LOL

Since I barely have an interest in sports unless you count lap dancing a sport, I have even less interest in sports movies... but there are a few sports related movies I love...

The Natural... different from the book, but still a great experience!
Field of Dreams... hard to not think of your dad and/or get choked up!
The Babe Ruth Story... my uncle was in it!
Cinderella Man... inspiring! Plus, I'm Irish from NYC... have heard about Braddock since I was a kid.
Seabiscuit... visually a stunner for me, but also inspiring like C. Man!
Bad News Bears (original)... the team I'd be on!
Brian's Song... not a dry eye in the house.
Shazam!... Shaq... what more can I say?

I think that's it for me!

I can agree with all those EXCEPT: Field of Costner (blecht)
and Sha-what?

Next post is 1000, Robert.

LOL... I was having a row with my dad when I saw Field of Dreams. Still a special movie in my teenage years...

I think it was called Shazam with Shaq. It was a joke. I didn't actually see it.

Woo hoo!!! I never thought I'd make 1000 posts!!!!

I seem to recall a baseball film called Eight Men Out, (dir. John Sayles) that I remember thinking was quite good. Really more about scandal/bribes - but baseball was definitely the backdrop.

dmc

Eight Men Out is the story of the 1919 "Black Socks"
It was very good...
but there are way too
many great baseball
films to include it on a
short list IMHO.

And it was a HELL of a movie, my man. Sayles has done some fine stuff like Matewan.

Could Cliffhanger count towards a rock climbing / mountaineering film?

Oooh, k2, I liked that when I was a kid...

Cooking is competitive, what about Alive about the soccer team in the mountains, they kinda cooked and it was like competitive eating.

Along those lines you can't forget "Vertical Limit"

I still think that the worst sequel in sports movie history is Major League 2, this of course was only trumped by Major League 3: Back to the Minors.

Talk about two VERYYYYY unnecessary sequels. But MJ1 was a sleeper hit so it was inevitable!

That could actually be a more fun thread than this one... Worst sports movies.

I would nominate the remake of Bad News Bears

Some Callaghan Favorites:

The National Pastime
1) Field of Dreams
2) The Pride of the Yankees
3) Angels in the Outfield (1951 version)
...
Speaking of the devil...
If anyone is interested, you can catch 'Coop' in The Pride of the Yankees in about 45 minutes on Turner Classic Movies (2:00 PM EST).

Be sure to watch for The Babe himself playing the part of...well, The Babe.

I actually saw that yesterday in the guide, but didn't want to get all wrapped up in it. Plus, I have it on DVD, but it's still a great film that most people seem to have not seen.
