sennheiser mkh416 - short shotgun mic, thats the best choice for a thousand dollars. But then Im not including the windscreen and shockmount.
What I would do for 1000 bucks is get an Oktava MK012 with hypercardioid cap and BBG for the interiors, and an Audio Technica AT4073a rifle with rycote kit for the exterior shots.
That'll give you more flexibility when you shoot.
Oktava is available from Sound Room
Everything else from B&H or your local supplier.
