Yeah I liked the nearer edition of The Gunslinger...
There is also a comic adaption coming out from Marvel comics.
I haven't bought a comic book in 20 years, but might have to pick that baby up.

Yeah the original editon of Gunslinger felt like a young writer trying too hard...big words, etc. I really liked the newer edition better.

I've heard about the Marvel comic. I'm pretty excited about it as well. Really looking forward to that!

LOL

I just prefer the story that's actually in the book as opposed to what they did in that movie. Some great scenes, but it's not the SK story. SK himself says it. He's not a fan of it either so there.

Kubrick's The Shining is an anomaly in that it couldn't be farther away from the book itself...yet it took on a life of its own. The newer mini-series is damn near identical to the book, yet was a big let down.

Go figure.

I also always loved all four stories in The Bachman Books (Richard Bachman = SK's pseudonym.)

-Rage
-The Long Walk
-Road Work
-The Running Man

...If you find a copy, snag it though...
it was taken permanently out of print after being found in the lockers of the mamalucs involved in the Columbine shootings. They had apparently read "Rage" recently before.

Robert (or any other fan of The Dark Tower series)...

If the DT is ever filmed, more likely than not it will be in the form of a 10 part animated series on HBO. However, if the stars were to align just right, and it were made as a live-action theatrical series...
who would you like to see cast?

For myself, there has always only been one Roland. Those are some big boots to fill; and since I first read The Gunslinger in the mid-eighties, I have pictured only one man...
henriksen_lance.jpg

Lance Henriksen

It would be the role he was born to play IMO.

If pressed, I would offer as a second choice...
scott-glenn.jpg

Scott Glenn

I have read a few "fantasy casting" sites, and many of those cats are stuck on Viggo Mortensen for Roland, but I don't buy it. I can only see Henriksen.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Huge King fan also.

I've spent many a long night with the ka-tet.

Cell is next on my list as I've also heard great things.

My issues with this are I have never liked a King film adapt. except for Shawshank, IT, the first 3 quarters of the Stand, and to a lesser extent the Green Mile. I exclude Storm of the Century of course since its not an adaptation but prob my fav behind Shawshank.

The most distressing thing about this news to me though which I didn't see anyone else mention is that Eli Roth is directing. I'm fighting back the bile in my throat but it's a losing battle.

Chad,
That's so funny because Lance was always whom I pictured originally. LOL.
Scott Glenn is a good second choice. I hadn't thought of him.

I always worried if the DT ever was produced on film it would be butchered and condensed into say 3 movies. I'd HOPE it would receive the same care, respect, and attention to detail the Lord of the Rings received, but you just never know.

The only other casting no-brainer for me would be for Susannah...
angellabassett.jpg

Angela Bassett
(with Gary Sinise-like
removal of legs fx added)

Those are the two easy ones. Now is when it gets tricky...
Any suggestions for Eddie or Jake?

I've gone through several actors for Eddie in my mind,
the latest which is Guy Pearce. Until recently, I thought
Brad Pitt. That's a toughie.

For Jake I obviously thought Haley Joel Osment was perfect, but he has gotten too old to play the part now.

What I would love to see happen would be to condense the books into a trilogy and shoot the films simultaneously (ala The Lord of the Rings)...
Then possibly go back and shoot the prequel stuff (from Wizard and Glass, etc.) later on.

I'm excited to see what Eli Roth will do with someone else's script or atleast a script based off a book. I thought Tarantino's version of Rum Punch was excellent. So hopefully Quentin's new protege can prove himself in that way.

Also for the King fans:

Cusack is an amazing actor and considering his perfomance in Identity this could be a really good film.

He gets seven figures because he's Stephen King. One of the most successful writers EVER. Doesn't matter if the movie will be hit or miss. Its based on Stephen King's BOOK, and he sells an awful lot of those!

I'm sure Ms. Rowling made a pretty penny on the film rights to those little Harry Potter novels...

Yeah his books do extremely well, but for some reason the movies based on those books don't seem to do all that well (maybe I'm wrong about this) and based on the track record of the movies made out of his books, it seems risky to invest seven figures in the story rights. It's a little different for the Harry Potter author because those movies have been a huge success.

I'm definitely not bashing King. I love his books; just finished The Wastelands and am loving the whole Dark Tower series so far. I also don't think it's King's fault that the movies don't live up to the potential of the books (maybe with the exception of Maximum Overdrive :), I'm just surprised that studios would continue to invest big money in the story rights when the end result has historically not justified it. Either way, I'm sure I'll be in the theater when this comes out and I do plan to read the book when I get some free time.
