This would best had been posted in that thread about great BTS DVDs, but I couldn't find it...
Anyway, I got this DVD a couple of days ago among some others (Constantine, Cinderella Man, Pride&Prejudice, Batman Begins and some more... haven't bought anything for like 3 months). I wasn't initially interested in this extended version as I already had the 2-disc one. But I was sold on it the moment I saw the packaging - totally different from the US edition and I'm a sucker for big pretty boxes with lots of discs
And wow, this edition might be worth its price for the new documentary alone. Just finished watching it - 3 hours 15 minutes without credits. Whole story of making the movie from coming up with the script idea and writing it during actual production to location scouting, costumes creation production design, principal photography, vfx and even pre/post Awards thoughts. They talked about the 3 big battles, about 20-40 minutes each, with LOTS of BTS video. Very fun watching 20 actors fighting each other on the arena as they're being shot at with sand/blood cannons, cheered by 5'000 extras and all the while photographed by 4-5 cameras... And even though I'm not a fan of sit-down "Making of" interviews, these were actually interesting as they went through the whole production process with this fresh new look (documentary is dated May 2005), reflecting on their 6 years' old work, and you can see them all being very passionate about jumping into something basically unknown and impossibly hard.
Of course it helps that I love Gladiator and admire Ridley Scott, but who doesn't? :cheesy:
So, what's the point of this thread? To let those of you wondering if the Extended Edition is worth it know that it indeed is. Forget your single/dual disc versions and get this one, you won't be disappointed.
There, I'm off to watch the 3rd disc...
