My homebuilt equipment

I grabbed the hand held stabilizer yesterday while outside with the kids and my brother-in-law. Clip is below. Nothing special and a little dry, but you can at least see it in action.

Here is a test clip of the jib riding on top of the dolly from a month ago. This clip drives me crazy because there is some digital "jitter" in it from the compression. I tried everything short of MGEP-2 to get rid of it... that's a whole other story. Anyway, I was working the jib and dolly alone. It wasn't too bad, but would be much easier with two people.

If you watch the clip below, please let me know if you see the "jitter" as well.

I will be putting up some cleaner and more interesting footage on my site in the future. But here are these for now.

I don't know why, but I can't seem to play some quicktime movies. I just checked for upadates and still no success. Is there a plugin I need to view these MOVs?

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks marlenedegrood.

Mike, the clips are just standard QT .mov files. You shouldn't need a plug-in to play them, just QT. You could try to right click and "save as". If that doesn't work, you could make sure you have the latest version of QT. Other than that, I'm not sure.

I've actually had a lot of problems playing H.264/QT files on my WinXP machine, you need QT7 to play them, but QT7 doesn't work for me so someone recommended I install VLC Media Player and now I can play all the QT/H.264 files just fine, though I can't play files that are embedded in IE.

Shawn, you are the freaking man!!!!!!!! I couldn't play H.264 files here at work because my Quicktime is too old and IT doesn't have time to update it for me. BUt I was able to use VLC and it works great. Thanks for the tip. Real life saver.

I like the stabilizer footage, looks really smooth for the most part. Pretty dang good for a homebuilt. The jib footage was really good too. I really like your home/yard. Especially the small basketball hoop near the big one. :D

Shawn - With VLC I was able to view the clips, but I lost the ability to replay or pause them. Anyway quicktime works.

Justin - I spoke with you over at the HSB forum about your Home Built Stabilizer. I received my plans today and will be building it in the next week or so - Good to see some real footage from it, looks fantastic! Do you have a DVX mounted on it? I'm going to add a quick release to my setup with a Bogen QR adapter that I found on the B&H site.

Thanks,
Mike

Not sure what you mean, are you downloading the files first? When I download them I can play, pause, replay, play again and again..

Ah yes, fellow SAD correct?

I'm was using my GL-2 in the clips. I ordered my DVX100b about 4 hours ago from B&H! I can't wait to get it. I am going to be getting packages this week like crazy. I ordered all the items from ebay to build a 35mm adapter and a few things for the full stabilizer rig. Christmas in March.

I :love4: UPS

Yes that's me. What a combo - B&H and UPS - My wife hates it when I mention B&H. Again the stabilizer footage looks great - I'll be building mine soon.

As for the MOV files, I just clicked on the link in the post above and it would play the video without any playback controls(Play, pause, rewind...) It would just play the video, then become a blank white screen. I went to a site that I know had a QT movie on its page with the controls and progress bar and they weren't there, it just played the video then blank. I'm on a PC, so I unistalled VCL and upgraded to QT7 on my old computer. Now the QT files playback fine.

Yep, it should be here in the next few days. I am trying to finish the 35mm adapter as much as I can before it gets here.

do u sell any of the stuff u build?

No. I just wouldn't have enough time to build more. I can try and answer any questions though if you plan on building something. You might want to check the homebuiltstabilizers forum. They have some gret home built stuff. There is probably somebody there that sells versions of their equipment or kits to build it.

With the washers as weights on the bottom and with the custom metal forearm support, it weighs in at 6.5lbs. Of course, this is with no camera.
