configuring a mac g5 (when you're gonna buy it)

hey whats up.

well im thinking of buying a mac g5, however since the apple site is extremely expensive for some odd reason, im going to buy ram, another hard drive, and a lcd screen (btw.. you can get 2 20.1" lcd's for about $100 more than what it costs you to get only ONE lcd at apple.com) seperately from newegg.com (it just saves money... believe me).

the only problem im having is this:
the nvidia cards that ship out with the current g5's are all pci-express right?
since you can get a nvidia 7800gt upgrade ($400), would it be possible to just also order the card from newegg ($285) and put that one in?

Yes, the cards are PCI-e in the new macs. If the card you buy is mac compatible, I don't see why it wouldnt work.

Be careful of what RAM you put in the G5. Apple RAM is more expensive because the chips are tested a bit more rigorously than regular off the shelf RAM as the G5's tolerances for memory errors are very, very low. This may have all changed with the move to intel, but to be on the safe side, I'd stick with a company that warrants their RAM for at least three years. It's also good to stick with name brands such as Crucial or Samsung. Bad RAM will cause all kinds of whackyness that you won't be able to put your finger on and It'll drive you nuts!!!

thats cool... a little thing on the nvidia thing again though:

since the 7800gt is supported on mac osx, does it necesarily have to be the exact same model? or can it be another model such as an eVGA 7800gt?

i mean.. they're nvidia's and regardless of which company make the card they all work with the drivers you download from nvidia.com, wouldnt that mean that the drivers that come with mac osx should work? any thoughts on this?

im probably gonna try it and if it so happens that the one that i order from newegg doesnt work... well... i'll just caugh up the $400 for the upgrade.

i'd just go with the newegg products and use them. the worst that can happen is that they don't work and you send back the products.

and also.... i think i might get an hvx200 later on. would the dual-core 2.0ghz do the job? or should i go for one of the other ones? i know the other ones will run them way better, but how would hd run on dual 2ghz, would it lag a lot or still run it smoothly? just wanna know peoples experiences with this

(sorry about all my questions, i just wanna make sure i get a good mac that will work good with hd also)

A dual core 2.0 will be fine for DVCPROHD.

In regards to the nVidia cards, only ones that specifically state they are for Mac will work. This comes from the Apple rep I used to work with and he's extremely knowlegdable.

Now if you need it now the Mac G5 is a great machine, but if you can hold off for a few months basically until Conroe is released . Some of the Macs have already gone Intel the Ibook and the Power mac still remain.
