35mm adapters and the old DVX100E

Hello guys!:)

I read somewhere, a long time ago, that 35mm-adapters would not work properly on the DVX100E, because of it's inferior macro-focusing compared to the DVX100AE/BE. Is that true? Would a Letus35/M2/GO35 etc. work on my DVX100E?

I have the original DVX100 and built a DIY adapter using twocik23's instructions. I have had no problem focusing on the macro end to achieve the correct focus through the adapter.

Thanks for the post Jeb. Speaking of twocik's design, do you have any screen grabs or footage based on your set up? I've seen the original videos and screen grabs, but I wondered how your results fared. And what did you end up using as a GG?

I own the 100E and I built my 35mm of Twock's design. I have had to find a work around as the the marco is a little more unruly. Instead of Z77 I am more like Z63 to get a macro of 7.

What macro did you use? I'm not quite sure about the last part of your post. Do you mean you're using a +7 macro? Sorry for my ignorance.

No, what I should of said is at Z64 I can only get the Manual Focus down to 09. Now when I am at Z63 I can only dial down to MF05. This should be noted for 100E owners as it can be a little frustrating at first, if your are using the 72mm to 58mm step down Z63 is the limit...at least for me as I am less likely to have issues in post.
I am using twocks design and dual +10 macros, my lens is the Canon 50mm f1.4. At first I thought it was me then I got tipped off about the inferior focus issue. I don't know how to post pics here but here's a link to my blog showing the 35mm attached w/ a few screen grabs.
Good luck!

Thanks for the additional info. Is it necessary to use two of the +10 macros? Just curious about this. I'm thinking that using two cuts the distance you have to zoom in. Is that right? How does it impact the image, as there is more glass for the image to go through?

Mike Dawson and twiock say yes! I haven't tried w/o both. Edwierdo also says if you put a +4 macro before the Dual +10 macros it creates less focusing distance? fix me if I am wrong Edwierdo.
I went with the G35/Dawson/Twiock/put your name here design. It's small and compact. I don't need rails although it's prolly a good idea since I want to put a focus follow on it. But I think I am going to put together a parts list to build Jarred's ghetto flo's...got any more questions just ask.

I think Ed uses the +4 and then a +10 macro, but he may use two. I've been following his plans rather closely and from what I can tell he just uses one +10 and one +4. Anyway, I'll try it out with one and then order another if necessary. Right now I'm just waiting for parts to arrive.

Maybe you missed it earlier, but what did you use as a GG? How big is the "grain issue" on the GG you used? I'm just curious as I am really trying to keep expectations low. Don't want to get myself all worked up and then be disappointed with the results.

As far a the GG goes I have beeen making my own (my arm!) I am trying various methods. The GG seems to be trial by error...I like the results but I know I can get better.

Take note that Ed's and Twiock designs are two totally seperate designs, at first I almost made the mistake of using ED's ring sizes with Twociks design....talk about mass confusion! choose one and stick with it, if you don't like it I am sure some one will buy it from you.

Thanks for the warning. I realize they are separate designs. I was just trying to clarify Ed's design for those who may not be as familiar with it.

I am using Twocik's design at the moment. I did get the plastic pipe pieces for Ed's design and saw how easy it would be to create his. I think the hardest part about all of this is finding a good GG. Hopefully mine will get off backorder sometime soon and get out here. My first three parts just arrived today and I'm excited to get trying. :D

The reason you're seeing grain is that

Maybe you're using the still lenses aperture ring?

Maybe your shutter speed on you camera is to high?

Maybe you're using the gain on the camera?

Maybe your GG or screen is not set right?

It's not just point and shoot after the adapter is attached, you have to make sure all of your settings are right (for ever shot). It's hard work to get the perfect shot, so take these question and remember them in your head when you're shooting. Hope this helps.

I've tried the grinding before, it just doesn't come out right. Maybe 1 out of 20 that will come out decent.

What grit are you using?

I'm confused......are your (twocik23) plans posted somewhere? Seems like all the links just link to other links.

I've just about completed an adapter based on a combination of Edwierdo's, the Home Depot adapter and my own interjection. I'm feeling pretty confident in it's design....but you know how that goes. The proof will be the finished product and if successfull.....I'll post the plans.

I have found that using two of these Asian macros introduces too much abberation for my taste. Some either dont see it or see it and dont care, and thats cool for them.

1 +10 and then 1 +4 to boost it a little do the trick for me. Marelene, try using two +10 if you are building mine, maybe you will like it.

All very good points. I own the original DVX-100 and without the adapter and my set up @ Z77 I can only dial in a MF of 38. Miniman was asking if there is a difference between the 100/100a & 100b. Twiock you from your pictures it look like you own the 100a?
If I remember right your suggested settings were around Z77 and MF07 w/ the adapter?
So from Miniman's suggestion there is a gap in focusing qualities correct me if I am wrong?

Here are my DVX 100 settings w/ static 35mm adapter
Z63
MF07
Shutter 1/60
f2.4
Gain Low

Hi guys I'm actually using a 100B

F5
Z72
MF06-MF09 works great
Shutter 1/24 - 1/120 (depending on the lighting)
F open - F14 (depending on the lighting)
Gain low
I also use a 72mm UV filter to prevent ware and tear on the threads.

I'm using a DVX100AE and I had to put two macros (+10 and +4) on it when I tested my own adapter. Or else I could not zoom in and focus properly.
