You know, the Motorola walkabouts or similar. They used to be $150 each and now they're down to around $80 per pair. You used to be able to buy them at Eckerds. Radio Shack sells similar. Cobra makes some.

They're like walkie talkies, but smaller. They operate on different frequencies and can be used hands free, with appropriate head gear.

Actually the band is referred to as FRS (Family Radio Service).

It depends on the nature of your shoot (outdoors / indoors / compact / spread out) but I have always used CLEAR COM. The most people I've had at once was 16 but I used different channels to direct camera people and staging / lighting people.

Mostly we had just a few and it works really well... low impedance long line runs without noise or interference.

the motorola walkabouts are good. two mile range. just used them yesterday.
