Can't Reach f2.8

I recently purchased and used the Olympus Zuiko f2.8 12-40mm lens indoors. The LCD display on my AF100 never says f2.8, only something like f3.4. What am I doing wrong?
 
I don't recall seeing that. Of course I did only look at the bottom right of the LCD. I had SCENE settings set up to give that news/ESPN look, if that helps.
 
Generally the camera won't report the most-open f-stop as a number, instead it'll say "OPEN". So try opening it up to its max; it should go OPEN.
