Why is 2 Step Verification Now Required?

Oh, that's cool, thank you!

I don't know what's possible with the current software, but maybe something for the old-timers.

Could be simple, maybe being able to add a few words under your username (but not sure how you'd manage who would get that option).

We once had the infamous orange squares which was a nice way of showing who's been around, active, helpful (although there's usually more than meets the eye for some members) - but anything, really.

Cool. We're discussing what do with all that stuff (and much more), and it's helpful to know what resonates with people and what doesn't.

What authentication app? If we need an app, at least tell us what the damn thing is. At least the email version works, but seriously, expecting people to do this every time something changes, is a total PIA, and so many times I cannot do what is needed as here, cellular coverage is very spotty, and sometimes I'm not in the position to be able to access mails. It's not an improvement, it's a real turn off. I just don't post most times and clear off again.

I went with Google Authenticator. And it appears to be only once every 30 days per unique device(if you choose that option).

My account has been crazy sluggish for the last few weeks, similar to what Run&Gun reported earlier this year. I heard the mods helped him - maybe they can help me? I had created a new account (Abe Halpert) that was working fine until it got banned without warning for being a duplicate account. So now I'm back trying to use my slow-as-molasses account. What a headache.

It has taken me 15 minutes to log in to the site. Probably for the last time.
The site has been slowing down a lot of late in the number of new posts and threads.
Now, login with the 2-factor authentication is a PAIN. There wasn't that much spam that I saw to warrant it.

I will be looking for another more user-friendly and active site.
All forums seem to have their day and then fade away. It has happened in cycles since the internet started in the 1970s

The site has been incredibly slow for me for the past 2 months if I'm logged in. So i navigate and read the forum in incognito mode. Then if I want to reply to something, I copy the URL into my normal browser where I'm logged in. It takes a long time to load and a long time to post a reply, but at least I only have to do those 2 operations.

I'm sure the mods and admin have lots of spam and dodgy posts to clear up every day, but surely the drive for any forum is to attract new members, rejuvenate discussions and enable growth. My access is via 6 computers, two pads and a phone, and I have resigned myself to email authentication, as I am not putting an app I only need for this forum on every device (and don't know anything about). Two of the computers have enhanced security systems because they contain sensitive 3rd party data, and one pad is older and no longer makes it simple to do email - as in I have to use my server login to access the mail that way - my normal email clients won't run on it anymore. I currently have 8 forums that are active and I check in with daily during down time. Sadly, the faffing around this forum now requires to access it makes it bottom of the list. This is sad. Googling suggests lots of forums based on xenforo are having the same problem. I guess new post count monitoring will hopefully stay stable. My point, I think, is that this coupled with a change in direction at the same time, could be a problem. Time will tell. One forum I used to use went from busy to stagnant in just a few months when a few minor changes happened. I hope this one stays active.

I moderate on a forum that uses XenForo, there was a discussion with the site admin if new users should be made to go through additional steps before joining. He decided against it to avoid discouraging new members, while the older members tend not to post spam.

The forum gets spammers, although the numbers vary over time, as do the methods they use. Many are caught by the filters, but others get through by changing their MO. Currently, they appear to be using "about" in the member profiles to post spam, this seems to a method being used on various forums, since the links in the spam can take you to more spam in other forum profiles.

Usually, manual spam filtering seems to be effective, together with updating the spam filters, however, you do need to keep an eye out for new tactics from the spammers.

People (society) today have (has) very little tolerance for being even slightly inconvenienced. One has only to look at on-line reviews of almost anything. The slightest minor transgression or perceived slight or fault and it’s a one-star review with a scathing narrative and statement that they’ll never go there or buy/use the product/service ever again and encourage others to do the same.

Although at times the reactions are over-the-top (video game industry is brutal), speaking up could and is a good thing because it forced better products...otherwise mediocrity would milk as many pennies as possible (as we've seen in the camera industry for like 20 years).

Then one day...oh, no 10-bit? No, thank you. Oh, no AF...pass. ha

My account is still barely function. Can nobody help me? This is what I'm dealing with and apparently I'm not the only one. A revamp isn't of much use if the basic site function is impaired:

Exact same experience on phone whether on wifi or 5g. Takes about 2 min for any operation to go through, if it goes through at all. But I had started a new account (Abe Halpert) which was working fine until the mods banned it for being a duplicate.
How's it from your phone (not on your WiFi) or someone else's phone you can try?

What Abe is going through is exactly what I went through. If I wasn’t logged in, it worked like a charm, but once I logged in, or attempted to log in, the site would just turn into molasses, if it would even load anything at all. It didn’t matter what device I used or if it was WiFi or cellular. Cleared cache/cookies, etc. multiple times, tried different browsers, completely closed/rest browsers, laptop, iPad, iPhone, but nothing helped. Alex said the admins finally did/figured out something, and then it started working for me. It’s just kind of funny that it seems like it was right around the same time that my account started working again, is when Abe’s went south.

On a related note, I don't know if anyone remembers, but a few years back they updated the site and locked pretty much everyone out (accidentally).

The site would not work for many of the regulars unless we changed devices which were normally not used to access the forum.

I tried my phone which I never used back then and was able to log in but the computer would never work.

The recommendations for clearing cache/cookies, even completely resetting modem/WiFi, all failed...then one day whatever bottlenecks were occurring disappeared and we were good.

IT could be a trip...but Abe should change that signature because I'd throttle him ASAP if I owned DVXuser, LOL, j/k.

Wish I had Abe's internet DL speeds out here in hooterville.
Get Starlink. I got the new Mini model for when I'm traveling, and it is fantastic. Even works in-motion at up to 100 mph, although I haven't tested it at that speed myself. I can run it off a little battery for several hours when there's no available power.
