Who do you approach if you want to work in the camera department? Is it the production manager or the DOP?

If you are wanting to get work as a 2nd assistant cameraman, does experience on corporate vids and short films as an operator count? Or do you have to have prior experience as a 2nd AC on big name films? I have mainly operated corporate videos, and did one short film as a cam op.

Everything you are talking about has much more to do with establishing and nurturing relationships than experience. Skill, yes, but being well thought of by those involved in working with you on the camera team is more important. Having a good relationship with a 1st or DP would probably go farther than the production manager. Any DP or 1st isn't going to just roll over and accept any newbie supposed 2nd AC that the production manager or even the producer throws at them. But if either or both of them want you in, you are in. Buy beers, do some fun social stuff with them, build the relationship and then show them you have the skills.
