You start by doing.

Serious. You can get chroma cloth/paint very cheap. You need to learn how to light it and what works. Put it in your NLE and get busy! What gear do you have?

you just want to make sure you get enough light as possible, and keep the cloth straight to avoid casting shawdows. Its pretty much trial and error. What look are you going for?

Hey,
If you have Kinos , do you have a way to get the green tubes ? I've been shooting Green & Blue Matte work of 15 years & fell in love with the Kino Green tubes a few years ago. They do 90% of the work. They throw only the color light they are designed to. As in only a spike of green or blue. No more goofing with gels & 10 1 k's.

As to "as much light as possible, I say no". You don't want spill around the edges. Light with 2 - 2 banks of green or blue & edge with the opposite color. Magenta for Green to Straw of Blue. DO not over light the BKGD.

Also don't use bounce cards for fill, use fill lights, foam core will surely bounce colored light.

Hmmmm ... Use real chroma color back grounds, rent Kinos if you don't own them, test.

Just get a cheap screen or paint one and test. That's what I did.
I bought an 80 dollar screen and did some tests.

I posted this before, but here is the results. You can seen how simple the setup is, it was done in my kitchen.

Arcburn, Your clip is cool, but it is SO effected & fantasy it is not really a good example of what a good key looks like.

Sorry to seem negative, but a good key shot is something clean and hopefully undetectable to the viewer. I do spot work all day long and samples without clean / solid edges will never get me the gig.

They may soften, distort or totally mess with the image afterword, but if I don't get it razor sharp, I don't get paid.

no offense taken at all Steve. You are absolutely right. I was actually pretty happy with the key before I did the diffusion and stuff. That was more of a test to see he easily Sky Captain could be pulled off.

No, it doesn't cover greenscreening... it's generally a book/guide to the DVX itself, not general cinematography/lighting issues (the next package will cover all that).
