Re: How did they do this lighting setup?

i understand 3 point lighting, i've been trying to replicate their lighting at 1:41 but can't thus far. I'm wondering what their key light is (type of light, modifiers used, angle...etc)

I'd say it's probably a small soft source up high. Perhaps a Dedo in one of those little softboxes you can get for them.

It does look like a modifier similar to softbox but I would vote on either a beauty dish or a parabolic umbrella. Both modifiers, in my experience has that contrast-y look that I could never get with a softbox. Also, the catchlights on the eye looks like it's something circular rather than square-ish. A small octobox might work too.

I wouldn't say high up either, I'd say about 30 degrees to less than 45 degrees above his face. If you'd place it higher up, you won't be able to get that catchlights in his eye and the shadows would have been beneath his chin rather than on the side of his face and neck.

For the backlight, personally I'd use something like a softbox. not sure what they were using for the example though, but I like how the back light is still motivated by the incidental lights in the background.

Both sides of his face are lit - at different intensities, plus clearly a back light on his shoulders. I'd guess simple technique just carefully applied. Angles, distances, spread and lots of space around the subject.
