Just to start a general user thread for the 7Q. There are threads relating to the 7Q, but they are camera specific.


I use a 7Q, but on multiple cameras and recording to different formats for different clients. So, there are things that come up that can be useful information if consolidated, rather than chasing down 35 different specific threads.

As a disclaimer, if there already is a 7Q thread buried somewhere here on dvxuser, I will differ to that, but I couldn't find it.

External recorders are here to stay for a while, so, here we go.

I'll edit this first post to something more official, once we figure out if there isn't already a thread going on.

Maybe Mitch or some Odyssey owners can give me feedback on an issue I recently experienced.
FWIW, I addressed this with CD Customer Support online but haven't heard anything in response.

I experienced some digital artifacting in the overexposed areas of my frame that were only present on the Odyssey 7Q files.
They were not recorded to my camera's SxS cards in XDCAM 35MB format. They may not look significant on these still images but are VERY distracting in a moving frame.

Camera used: Sony PMW-F3
Codec: ProRes HQ

I definitely have to replace these clips with the lower quality XDCAM format.
There were other clips that were not overexposed where the Odyssey files exhibited lots of noise in high frequency detail that I've never had problems with when recording with my AJA Ki-Pro mini.
I really think I may have to default back to the Ki-Pro as my recording device if this isn't worked out.

Thoughts please.

That is strange indeed. I have to say, I've never seen that from any of my O7Q recorded footage, but I don't typically use the HD ProRes option. I'm sure they'll get on it right away, I've found CD to take this kind of thing very seriously. Since it's the weekend you likely won't hear from them until Monday.

I also just noticed that there is a discrepancy in the van's taillight between the two images as well!

Bill, I think I have it somewhere, but please PM me with your direct contact info so we can address this first thing on Monday. I'm guessing that our engineers will want to have a few frames from both versions of your original files. We have an F3 in our test lab that we can use to attempt to replicate the issue as part of our analysis.

OK, so which spec is accurate with the 2.10.x firmware update?

What the website says?

Recording Formats

Compressed formats: Apple ProRes 422(HQ) up to 1080/60p, 1080/60i, 720/60p

Or what the manual says?

One mentions 1080p/60p and the other says it's in the future. This is the type of stuff that drives people crazy!

The 7Q specs page also indicates it in a way -- it says on the convergent site AND manual
Compressed formats: 1080p 10-bit YCC 422 up to 120fps, 1080p RGB 12-bit 444 up to 60fps*

Really wonder if CD is just trying to mess with us....

Since I addressed this on the forum I wanted to report that Convergent-Design made sure to accommodate my needs and resolved my problem.

User-loadable or programable LUTs will be made available in a future firmware update.

Thanks. But still a little unclear…and maybe my terminology is off….I looked at spec on CD website and it says, Slog 2 monitoring is a current feature….? Perhaps I'm doing something wrong. i am using an FS700 and pushing the LUT button on the 7Q does nothing for me except make my current image one that is really overexposed. Thank you.
