NAB 2024 - Rumors and Wishes

I would very much like a successor to the Sigma fp/L that is Foveon based and global shutter.

I’m all set for cameras for a while. But bring on the accoutrement…

So far, I excited for the new shoulder pad & baseplate system for the Alexa 35, the new Fuji Duvo lenses, the new Canon broadcast ENG lens, and some of the lighting stuff.

Blackmagic Design announced a new line of cameras, the “Cine” line, the URSA 12K Cine FF with EF/PL mount for about $15,000 or so depending on kit options up to $16,500, and the big surprise is the new 17K 65mm URSA Cine coming out later this year for unsaid price level with Hasselblad/LPL mounts. They also announced the Pyxis 6K box cameras which come in L/PL/EF lens mount models and they use the same sensor as the Pocket 6K FF Cinema Camera. I told people not to sleep on Medium Format and, unless someone else surprises at NAB this year, we’re now going to have a true next gen cinema option with a real standard Medium Format sensor for what is hinted at being a relatively affordable price.

I was honestly looking at a RED Komodo X package as my next camera but am not enticed by the URSA Cine. I think you get a lot more value for your money. BM seems to be doing what RED talked about doing years ago.

The Pyxis looks like a great B-cam as well. I wonder if the folks at Nexus Camera just crapped their pants with the Pyxis reveal.

Blackmagic has finally blown me away. The Pyxis is exactly (at least mostly) what people have been asking for. But they didn't just stop there. Wow!!

Wahhh make a box camera Blackmagic!!!

here you go…

wahh the screen doesn’t flip !!!

I mean Komodo? No. Z cam? No.

Also, WTF is this with no internal ND filters on the PYXIS? I'm very settled into the Sony ecosystem these days with my FX6, but the lack of internal NDs on this camera makes it a total non-starter if I ever were to start looking elsewhere.

8K and 12K is still just a niche in the real world and is largely not needed or even wanted. With the exception of my VariCam’s, every other camera that I own and regularly use is capable of recording 4K, yet the vast majority of what I still shoot and deliver is HD. And a lot of that is still 720P.

I think we all know that there are benefits from deriving a recorded image from a higher rez sensor, but we’ve passed the point of diminishing returns with ever higher resolution recorded files, for the majority of work. Most clients simply cannot handle 8K+. And many just don’t want to deal with 4K, still, outside of small scale projects.

Preach. But for me, I'm living in a 4K recording world, deliver in HD. But so far, no interest in anything more

As for me, all I want for Christmas is our industry to survive generative AI.

Blackmagic pyxis looks pretty cool but not something I need

Screen doesn't flip out. What do we think about that?

BM old-timers used like 8 BM cameras without the screen flipping out (or no screen at all), but it's probably an issue for those used to one. I'm very indifferent to it; will never use this camera (or really most new cameras at this point in my life), but do think it looks great.

Looks great, but if they just put in the 6k cinema camera sensor without addressing the noise issues it's a no buy for me...

I am sure it is a great tool but to me it looks like a box camera! Without NDs or a screen that is position-able, a kind of poorly designed box at that. Not that LCDs are that usable but locking it in the box sort of relegates it to 100% menu duties. Choices. This late in the game they can be the difference in buying decisions.

The choice of the side monitor basically renders it useless for any handheld work. Of course you can add a monitor on top, but I'm a big fan of minimalists systems.
