MY DIY 'SOFT BOX' with baffle & louvers.

Look at you go!. Looking good. How does it all work. I suggest breaking out a still digital (look slike you have one) and light a subject about 5 ft from a background and setting up your light in different ways to see the differences.

With/without the baffle

with/without the louvers

Did the grid not work out or was it too much work?

I just hope you dont go through all this and then just wish you bought the stuff. (That's what I do. I spend $400 and 50 hours trying to make something then give up and spend the $500 the thing would have cost to begin with.)

LOL I did this a few times. Sometimes to completion but often to find theres something in the original that its impossible manufacture on the cheap but this was the function I needed most.

Anyway the SB looks good, for some reason I couldnt see larger of stills.

Thanks man, it works great. I'm gonna try and light a subject tomorrow, perharps my son, and post the pics. I'm gonna make the grid next, the good thing about this project is that i haven't spent a dollar as yet. I had everything i needed, in my outside shed. Thanks again for your ideas GageFX..............j

When you do your light tests, dont try for anything fancy or set the light without the louvers to try to match the light with the louvers... just set the light up exactly the same way each time. What you want to see is how much control you really have. And to do that, you need to see what it is inherantly doing before you alter it. Sure, you can feather the light forward to keep spill off the BG, but lets see the difference to begin with.

I have to do some more light test and set ups when i get a bit more time. But here are some pics. of my son, using the diy softbox with baffle & louvers http://public.fotki.com/6436 Any ideas suggestions please let me know, thanks,,,,,,,,,,,,J

I'm not sure that reflector is doing anything. Have you moved it around to try to get more fill?

It also looks like you are a bit underexposed. I imagine if you opened up a bit, (exposure) you would start to blow the BG, but you are a bit dark on the face. Move the key in a bit, get that face hotter, move the whole reflector/stand towrds the camera a bit then turn the reflector back towards the subject.

Just my initial thoughts.

Thanks GageFx, good suggestions.............i felt that i needed more fill. Soon as i get some more time, i will do some more test, where as i could move the ligt and reflector around a bit more . Change reflectors silver, gold etc. or maybe bounce a light of the reflector etc. . Thanks again for your ideas, J.
