HVX + M2 Grabs from WWII Christmas Movie

I wrapped shooting for "MY CHRISTMAS SOLDIER" last week and figured I'd post the requisite grabs. Trailer coming soon. Links are next to each thumbnail for the full-res JPEG. Took stills as PSD out of Avid and saved for web at 80%.

Lenses were all Nikon, usually the 35 - 70mm F2.8
Lights were two 1200w HMIs and and about 4k of tungsten.

No color correction, no nothin' -- just imported the footage into Avid and saved a few stills.

Niiiceeee.

M2 is beast. Can't wait to get mines. Funny that Im investing in this before I even get a camera.

As said before, it's good to see someone from home doing what they can.
 
I like it! In the first still, I think the suit on the man on the right is slightly too modern. Particularly the tie. But the image is beautiful!

In the second frame, it looks a little like the light being cast on them is coming from a television, but I'm sure that's remedied in the moving clip. If not, a little color correction will take care of it.

Grabs three and four are picture perfect. I love them. I really am considering making them a desktop background of some type.

Grab 5 is ok, but the wall is so bright it distracts from his face, which is mostly in shadow. Perhaps giving a little amp to his eyes would solve that problem, or even just pulling the wall down.


Grab 6, beautiful. The lighting looks great. Unfortunately, my eye keeps darting back to the middle of the frame. I think it might be a framing issue. It might just be the sparkle on the hand rail.

Grab 7, very active, not sure who is supposed to be the central focus here, but I love this shot. Man oh man. I can't wait until I get ahold of an HVX.


I have a ton of ideas, a few of which are on paper, but now I'm going to go over all of them again. Your frames tell a tremendous amount of story, I think. Communicating clearly what is going on, with lighting, atmospheric effects, focus, and color (even though they haven't been graded yet). Great work man, I love all of it. I'm definitely going to try to see the finished film.

Too bad I'm only sixteen. Not much buying power is in my hands as of yet. Alas, that will change in a few years, whether I like it or not.

Stills look great, Owen! I like the lighting choices. Seems like the M2 is becoming quite the indie tool, eh?

As an aside, I noticed you have some edge softness issues in your frames as I did... just curious which achromat you used?
 
I used the 72mm achromat, but it showed up the day before I started shooting... so no time to perfect it. It did give me better sharpness than the 55mm I had on there. I need to sit and tweak it though... I also dove in with the RedRock follow focus -- very handy indeed.

not sure if you still tread these boards but I thought I would compliment you on these grabs. Nice work. HVX and the M2 in my opinion still look great and do indeed have a, for want of better comparison, 16mm feel to them.

I love trolling the old posts, especially the ones that concern gear I still own. I have come across old posts from Philip Bloom, early posts from Brian at RedRock and others who have gone on to great success. Interesting to see them at their humble beginnings.

EDIT: And i have found countless dead links to vid clips. Not everyone goes on to bigger and better things.

Hvx hase bad image in night, but these image tell, maybe you can manage them!!! Ive a hvx200A that is 2008 -but I dont belive deliver good image in night... Hovever this topic useful !
