FX3 ---> Atomos Ninja V+ looses noise reduction?

Does anyone have any info on this?

I noticed the FX3 footage shot on the internal SD card is MUCH LESS noisy than the footage recorded simultaneously on the NINJA.

Spoke with a SONY rep and seems like the camera bypasses the noise reduction process when recording out via HDMI.

Plausible since noise reduction is almost never the same internally and externally in any camera.

As you hinted/questioned, sometimes it's not even applied at all via HDMI or SDI (not sure for this particular model).

Are you sending a raw signal over HDMI? In that case it will bypass the noise reduction.

If you're sending a video signal over HDMI I would have assumed that it would be after the NR was applied. My only guess there is the codec would impact how the noise looks.

I seem to recall a statement from Atomos on this subject, where they said that no noise reduction was applied in camera was sent out of the HDMI in either encoded or RAW. The reason being that the NR used for the various compression rates in the camera are different in camera because the internal NR applied is dependent on which bit rate and codec is being used in camera. None of which would be beneficial to any type of external recording. Most LOG and RAW recording is of course done without any NR and detail enhancement.

Unlike the FS7/FX6/FX9 which have NR options, the A7 and the FX mirrorless bodies don't offer that option to turn NR on or off or select Low, Medium or High on both encoded and Cine EI. I notice some of the Panasonic mirrorless offer degrees of NR setting on their encoded output and no NR on the RAW output. I guess because there are no NR options internally, Sony decided to bypass NR altogether on the HDMI output.
