Final Cut Extreme ??

I'm getting the feeling we won't be seeing Final Cut Extreme at NAB. Last year Apple released all their products on the first Saturday. Also, when Apple releases new products they generally update their entire website to reflect all the new stuff. The only thing on Apple's website is the new MacBook 17".

If there is in fact no Final Cut release, I'll be disappointed, but I bet we'll see it released during their World Wide Developer's conference this summer along with the new intel professional Macs. It seems more likely that Apple will release their "Avid Killer" along with the new Pro machines.

Right now though, I just want better MXF file support & importing. That's all I want.

Avid killer? I'd like to see a better system of file organization, the Avid media tool system is THE BEST.

That is probably true, but I wouldn't underestimate Apple. If they set out to make an "Avid killer" then they probably did something right. Now, if it's enough to make people jump ship, that's a different story. Don't forget that FCP has stole a lot of Avid's thunder in it's class.

There is no FCP announcement at NAB (so far at least). Just the 17" MB Pro. The Mac booth actually is pretty lame...it's basically the same setup as last year, with less new stuff.

It would take a lot for me to change over... I need the trimming funtionality of Avid too. And, PC support (which is likely to never happen) :(

Good point, I don't think PC support is in the cards for Apple, forgot about that.

Speaking of which, Avid released Media Composer for Mac, so maybe they foresee some serious competition from Apple and want to get the jump on them. It's going to be an interesting year.

If there's one thing I know, it's in the past 6 years, Apple has made 50 times more advancements in all aspects of their business than Avid could ever DREAM of accomplishing. I used to be a die hard Pro Tools user (NOBODY was going to convince me to switch) until they started pulling crap like CHARGING for MP3 export options after the fact I'd already dropped thousands on their stupid software. It's that type of business mentality that will slowly drive customers away.

I'm not saying Avid will disappear or even recede into the background, I'm just saying that Avid's about to get a big run for its money. In the world of technology, the "industry standard" can change at the drop of a hat. It seems like RED is about to do just that. The die hard 35mm film advocates can stomp and scream all they want... but they're goin' down! And if Apple puts out software as powerful and streamlined as an Avid at 1/2 the price... beeewaaaaare Avid.

there's suprisingly little info coming out of nab. is this just because everyones too busy looking?

I know if I'm there, I'd be too busy checking out the new toys. Wait until after the show closes today.

Unfortunately not as the Avid software is not yet Universal - this will come when Apple release Intel based desktop machines :)

I still think Avid's NAB announcements are very good though.

I have not tried it myself but, I understand that people have been running Avid Xpress Pro HD on a macbook pro under windows XP right now.
thanks to bootcamp.

I've tried it and it will not work properly on the MacBook Pro's under Win XP as they use ATI video cards - the PC version of Xpress Pro HD only works with nVidia graphics cards (and some old ATI cards).

The software starts up and runs fine, but try and play a clip and the composer window either freezes or goes black.

Others have reported more success with the Mac Mini and Win XP - its Intel GPU seems to work ok.

FCP is an Avid Killer for software in the same price range..

When you get into $100K worth of Avid Hardware + Software.. then clearly different story..

Avid's interface is an archaic piece of junk.. it's GUi workflow is absolutely awful... That is what keeps me from investing serious time into learning the software better.

I enjoy the fact you chose to link to an article about Kong... and mention Jamie Selkirk.. the fact that he does not know how to use Avid blows my mind... you'd think an editor.. would.. perhaps.. know the software that is now part of his job.. but I digress.

FCP needs a media manger... for large scale projects.. it is definately behind Avid... but then Again... FCP is not really competing with Avid on that level....yet..
